Don't know of any problems or what it's like yet. I've been too busy to even install it but will probably do that this evening.

Ok, I have zero technical problems running this game on win2k using an ATI Radeon 8500LE. Here are some random thoughts...

1). The game engine is pretty enough if you enable all the graphical features and turn up the resolution but too high a resolution (above 1024x768) and the text becomes very hard to read. The game loads pretty fast too.

    2) The user interface rocks compared to the Balder's Gate series. You can now have everything up like checking inventory, having a map in the corner of your screen while still being able to interact with the world. And the radial menus you used to interact with most things works very well. There're also 3 sets of very handy hotkeys you can assign commands.

3). Character creation/leveling now comes with a recommend command for those of us who knows little about the D&D universe and thus have no idea what skills we should be training.

4). Some good gameplay changes like when you die you are given the choice of repawning using a percentage of your exp and gold or load a previous game. Can be somewhat useful if you are forgetful about saving.

5). You now only control your main character and any NPCs or henchmen as they are called in NWN do their own stuff. You can of course talk to them and tell them how to react to some situations like alway use ranged weapons etc. You can't even change their equipment! The only thing you can do is give them healing potions so they can heal themselves. This is a big change from Balder's Gate cause you now don't get to play with all the armour/weapons/spells/skills only the other classes have access to. But I think you can level in any class you like as when you're leveling it asks which class you want to level. I always picked the one I am playing so not positive on this one.

6). The story is a bit of a letdown. So far I could care less what happens in Neverwinter. The story seems quite bland compared to other bioware RPGs like Planescape:Torment or the Balder's Gate series. None of the characters really stands out at this point though I suppose I am not too far from the start of the game. Maybe it'll get better...

Well, I'll post again when I have more thoughts.

Yeah codemonkey i noticed all that too!
The story so far is bland... Baldours gate was superb... the Spawn of Bhall... and planescape.. well needs no comment.. if you know the game you know its amazing story... This nwn though starts off with finding a cure to a plague... wow.. yeah.. pointles... anyway.. i hope it gets better... maybe it lulls you into a false sense of security then a major plot twist... so far though its not riveting. Im much more impressed with Morrowind...

btw i am staying away from the main quest for as long as possible and doing the other quests and dungeon stuff... doing that im a feck off bad ass unkillable killing machine and i have barely even gone near the main quest so it will be very easy when i get around to it.. watch out vivec im gonna kick your ass!

Saruman once you get past level 20 in Morrowind the game get to easy.

At level 48 I took out 3 wizards,2 Deadra Lords,1 Golden Saint and some sommened undead and I only lost about 1/5 of my health bar.

The end fight is way to easy as well :(

Just hoping NWN will be out soon as Iv run out of stuff to play.

    Its out on friday.

    Saruman:

NWN uses ECL (encounter level) and CR (challenge rating) to set encounters. Doing side adventures before the main quest won't make you unstoppable, it'll just make the creatures you encounter more difficult. (ie: if you are 3rd level you might meet two orcs, at 10th level that would be two ogres, even though it's the same place).

They made it this way so you could take your character online and still continue the main quest without having a second character (like diablo).

Having said that, the single player story is supposed to be a bit bland, nearly every roleplaying review I've read has slated the story. But the game is supposed to be excellent and , considering I don't care about hte quest but am more concerned with what the fans are creating, I'm still on for purchasing this little gem.

Had a look at the patch's readme, fixes some pretty big bugs alright.

two fan created modules out (already!!!!). don't know if they are any good:

a PvP module, up to four teams, sounds like fun:

    and a proper scenario-in-progress:

Thats true venom... im now i think level 49 and i cant be killed... well i did go into a shrine full of enemies and without fixing my health... then by the time i came to a certain room i had a little bit left only and a room full of enemies that were surrounding me so no escape to take a potion... could not even use levitate very easy as it was taking too long to cast with a hit every second... anyway finally managed a levitate.. then took a few potions... got me about half way.. tried again and got beaten down to near death... If they are all facing you its fine but they were behind me too so thats hard.. anway summoned a fire atronach, they attacked him and i used the confusion to regain some strength and kill whoever was left.. If you play like that it becomes a challenge sometimes but thats a rare moment to have so many to deal with.

Anyway the patch has a difficulty slider which i have on hardest... apparently with it that way you meet some enemies that can kill you with 2 hits... cant wait...

Have you tried tangling with vampires yet? I have not found any yet though there is a map on the elderscrolls forum that points their location... also get mods if you have completed the game.. some good ones out there.. new worlds even... new quests and im sure one to make enemies harder!

Still have a gammy PII 450MHZ.

Am I going to be able to run this or must I finally accept the fact that my PC is a flaming bag of poo?

I would be surprised if you could so much as install it.. sorry m8 but your computer is out of date (hey that rhymes!!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

The problem is tho since Iv finished the game,I pretty much done every type of quest in the game so it would be just more of the same so I think I just start on NWN when I get it on friday :)

a review from Ryan Dancey: (he's a Wizards of the coast product developer).

not all that good from him but some of the later comments are a bit more inspiring.

Apparently it seems to be running well on lowspec PC's, i.e its actually running

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Except on Ryan Dancey's crappy integratef Intel graphics.. muppet get a real grapgics card!!

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

Well, there's low spec and then there's low spec with a voodoo 3 card. Won't run it. Have to order new PC from Dell or something.

when you export your character for online play it exports at level 1 i tried it last night with my lvl 10 wizard :/

the DM tools and world building tools are absolutly fantastic..

    just need some better tuts

im well impressed with the game and can easily say it beats baldurs gate hands down (wich i found a bit cumbersome when you had loads of characters inventorys spells items etc)

managed to get off the first chapter in under 14 hours (is that a record)

oh yeah if anyone finds any recipes for items gimme a shout.....

Got it a few days ago, only had a few hours to play it so far (Damn job), But so far it seems pretty good. Not as life consuming as the BG series though or as hmmmm how shall i put this, Epic seeming :)

I was a bit dissapointed about the fact you couldnt import your character from BG2 because when playing that theres a thing that comes up saying "Your experience doesnt have to end with Baldurs gate 2, You can import your character to NWN and continue your story" or something like that. When did they change this? I noticed Blackisle wasnt one of the developersof NWN, did that have something to do with it?
(I really woulda loved to import me character ive used the same one for BG, TOSC, BG2:Shadows of Amn and TOB) Jees i (used to) have a lot of free time :)

Yeah that sucked.. my sorcerer was pretty damn good too... now he is forgotten in a save game folder on my hard disk...

no it was because they decided to use d&d 3rd edition rules

Does anyone else find 3rd edition less fun than 2nd edition?

Can someone explain whats the point in collecting books in the game? I've tried reading some but half of them are just stories. Can someone explain their point in the game.

They're mainly back story to the world but some of them contain recipes for spells/scrolls/potions I believe. I don't play a mage/sorcerer so never paid much attention to them.
