Has anyone been able to fly this properly? I've been trying for ages but i can't do it. Whats your technique and how long have you been able to fly for?

Today i just about managed to fly straight across the sea to Staunton Island[crashed into a building on that motorway near the bridge to shoreside vale].Its a real hard plane to fly[im on PS2.].I think i just did a run from the start of the runway and got lucky.Ive never managed to fly far before or since.Perhaps the plane has been made difficult to fly deliberately for some reason? Its called the dodo and dodos cant fly. Also,Liberty is modelled on New York.Perhaps they didnt want us recreating September 11th by flying into the buildings downtown.Just a theory;)

Both myself and my brother have been able to fly the plane for well over 3 mins each. Its actually quite easy once you get off the ground to control it. You must keep it balanced all the time, only tap the forwards and backwards keys (assuming using the keyboard). I dont know how else to explain it, you just get the hang of it. It may be easier to do using the keyboard than using a gamepad.

Ok, this is how I fly the Dodo on the PC (LONG POST!):

When you've lined up the Dodo to point down the airport runway towards Staunton, press forward ("w" key for me) and keep my finger down on the "Dodo down" button (default is the Num 6 key). As you speed down the runway, look out for sparks that fly out from underneath the Dodo; this is your cue to let go of the Num 6 key. However (and this is the difficult part), you must very carefully tap the Num 6 key while the Dodo is rapidly gaining altitude. If you let the Dodo soar into the sky too quickly, it'll eventually stall and crash, so keep gently tapping the Num 6 key in order to keep the plane more or less parallel with the ground. All the while keeping your finger on the forward key (in fact, never let go of this button).

Once you've got the hang of lift-off, you're next task is to keep the Dodo up in the air. Every so often, the Dodo will suddenly start to lose altitude. Don't panic! Let the Dodo glide down, because as it does, it will gain speed and then soar higher into the sky. In other words, the Dodo will lose altitude in order to gain even more altitude, such is the way the Dodo works (you'll get the hang of it eventually). Sometimes, however, the Dodo will lose altitude too quickly, and consequently gain more altitude to the point of stalling, in which case you're going to have to tap Num 6 gently in order to keep the Dodo parallel with the earth (similar to while taking off).

Finally, there's the problem of turning while in the air. If you want to turn, you must only tap left or right. If you hold right down (for instance), the Dodo will spin out altogether and start spiralling down towards the ground (which looks quite cool by the way ;)) But you really don't want this to happen. Tap gently left or right, taking as much time as you need, and you should be fine. Of course, if realise that you're turning too hard and are about to spin out, then tap (you must only TAP!) the opposite direction of your turn. So for example, if you are turning a hard left and losing control, then tap right in order to stabilise again. However, you'll noticed that when you turn too fast, you'll also gain a lot of altitude, so you'll have to tap Num 6 in order to prevent the Dodo from gaining too much altitude, while at the same time tapping the opposite direction of your turn to prevent spinning out. Tricky! You'll get what I mean with lots of practise...

And that's basically it. Hope that wasn't too boring. If you want to land, well I just stall the plane altogether by pressing Num 9 (the "Dodo up" key). Doing this allows you to land on buildings where there's barely room for the Dodo to sit on. What you need to do is be flying just below the roof of the building, and just before you crash into that building, slam Num 9 and the plane should soar into the air, clip the edge of the roof, and land perfectly on the roof. VERY hard to do, but satisfying when you get it right. Another thing to note is, never use Num 9 for anything else. I've tried tapping Num 9 in order to gain altitude, but I ended up tapping Num 6 even more in order to regain stability. Just avoid the Num 9 key altogether, except for when you want to deliberately stall the plane and land somewhere.

Things to do with the Dodo:

    1. Land on the top of Kenji's casino (where you do the cutscenes with him). Watch out though, as there's a hole you fall through on his roof.

    2. Fly over, and into, the stadium in Staunton island. If you fly right into it, you'll end up below the ground. Really weird, but avoid the front entrance as there's a hole there that will land you outside the stadium.

    3. Land on the boat and the lighthouse in Portland.

    4. Land inside the construction building where you do Asuka's later missions (where she is always torturing that Miguel guy). You need to fly right into the second brown strip between all the green glass stuff that makes up the exterior of the building.

    5. Fly to the "Ghost Town". This is the place where the game developers dumped the intro sequence (where you're seen escaping from a bank and that girlfriend shoots and betrays you. You know what I'm talking about!). To get there, fly around and behind Shoreside Vale. The Ghost Town is almost completely transparent i.e. you can fly right through the buildings etc. Many people have attempted to land somewhere there, but no luck. Maybe YOU can try? ;)

That's all I can remember. I'm sure there are more places, but I think I may be confusing the Dodo with the tank. The tank can get MUCH higher, so there are more things to do with the tank. However, I recommend you all learn to fly the Dodo first before tackling the absolute monster that is, the TANK! (/me predicts another loooooong post about how to fly the tank...sigh). Anyway, have fun flying the Dodo. Any questions, email me :)

Oh I forgot. Try to avoid flying over Unique Jumps. When you fly over one, the camera will position itself permanently in the one place, and will only go back to normal when you land your vehicle. The problem is that the game thinks that you're actually driving a normal car, rather than flying the Dodo. And such is the way Unique Jumps work, the only way to get the camera back to normal is to land the plane. This is the only reason I haven't been able to rack up massive Dodo flying stats; just about every flight I make is ruined by a Unique Jump

sh*t, when did gta3 come out on the p.c? Is it better than the ps2 version?

Excellent guide [niko], I'll be sure to try that as soon as I get home. Didn't know you could tilt the dodo up and down with the num 6 and 9.

I've actually been trying to get a hold of a tank and store it in my garage. I've managed to get a hold of one on a few occasions, but each time I've failed to lose my wanted level and got wasted :(

I've only managed to get 53 of the packages (they're getting a little tricky to find now), but it's a blast when i have all the weapons outside the base. This game 0wns

I got the tank by having all 6 police bribes at my hideout. In Staunton at the hideout, I'd cause complete mayhem and get my wanted level to 6, then peek out onto the main road until a tank appears. I'd then try to lure the tank down to where the police bribes are. From here it's pretty simple; I'd just run through the bribes, and either jack the tank or shoot at it in order to lure the 2 army guys to come out. You've got to kill them quick though as they have M16s, handguns, grenades, full body armour, you name it!

If you don't have bribes, you can still get the tank at the pay and spray. Just do everything I've said above, lure the tank in etc. (once again, do this in Staunton) and once the tank is close enough to the actual garage of the pay and spray, quickly drive in and lose your wanted level, and hopefully that tank hasn't disappeared. After that, just steal it or whatever.

Anyways, back to Dodo flying. Has anyone managed to fly into the Construction building where you do Asuka's later missions? I've never actually done it myself, I just found it out on the Internet. Also, when do you want a guide to flying the tank? :)

Why goto that effort of buying and stealing tanks?Get them with a cheat.Theres a cheat i use regularly but i dont have it to memory-go to google and type GTA3 Tank Cheat and you should get it.
But if you really do want to steal a tank heres what you do.Near the park at Belleview park-the side nearest the portland bridge, there is an internet cafe nearby. Its a glass plated building on your left on one of the sideroads near the park jst as you enter.Go in,kill everybody inside and blow up passing traffic with your bazooka[cheat to get all weapons r2 r2 l1 r2 left down right up left down right up].This will soon get the helicopter and a load of cops and even the fbi to the scene.Blow these up and the swat teams and tanks will arrive.Try to steal a tank.Watch out-the swat men have extremely powerful machineguns-if your in the line of fire for only a second or 2 your dead.

Ahhh, the lure of cheats can be quite hard to resist, but really, what's the fun in cheats ;). I find it much more fun to actually go out onto the street armed with M16s and grenade launchers, and start causing total destruction (this is in gta3, not in real life!). It's a real challenge getting the tank or FBI car or whatever the hard way. Also (not sure about this one) if you cheat you destroy your chances of completing the game 100%. I think this only applies to cheats that you can't undo...I don't know. Basically, I think cheating is evil :)

    The cheat is "giveusatank"
    type it in game.
I use that for a laugh when im stuck at somfin.

If you use the small runway beside the big one you will be able to fly over to the next island and you can land on the bridge but it is a bit tricky to land.
