    Heres my problem I recently got redhat 7 on disk so I thought hmm thatll do nicely for trying to learn about how to use linux etc etc. I have (had!) windows on a seperate Hard Drive and I installed red hat onto my old 6 gig hard drive.

    All seemed to be going fine. I chose to partition manually using disk druid and created the 3 partitions (the /,swap and boot) as stated. I chose to install lilo to the first sector of the root and not onto the Master Boot Record as having read that windows 2k wouldnt like this in the least and that its a fussy basterd.

    All was done chose the packages etc created the boot disk at the end and restarted the machine. Booted fine got a what I assume was the lilo boot screen and choose to boot linux as that was all that was there. Logged in fine and went about trying to figure out what was what etc. Said fine ill see how win2k is. Rebooted and BAM! no option to boot red hat no way to boot win2k. Ive tried several things such as attempting rescues etc but im lost.

    Cant even seem to boot redhat using the bootdisk.

    Am I making a very obvious mistake somewhere along the lines? Help would be geatly welcomed as its getting annoying at this stage. :)

    You should be able to boot from the floppy, since that (obviously) skips the other boot methods. Is your BIOS configured to attempt to boot from a floppy first? If we could get you booted, we could fix up the LILO config for you.

    I tried booting up there with the win2k hard drive unplugged and it still wouldnt boot with or woithout the bootdisk (ive the floppy enabled to be booted from then the cd) Im thinking about formatting both drives again and reinstalling both os's to their respective drives. Then hopefully ill get into linux and lilo can be sorted then :)

    boot=/dev/hdc
    map=/boot/map
    install=/boot/boot.b
    prompt
    timeout=50
    message=/boot/message
    linear
    default=linux

    image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
    label=linux
    read-only
    root=/dev/hdc5

    Thers the lilo.conf file :) now I have to try get win2k Hard drive happy :(

    Win2K/NT and Linux are always problematical. If you Google for them though, there's a few docs specific to it. Try the Linux index first.

    i think if you add a nice option to boot the win2k disk into lilo.conf. something like this, no harm to try off the top of my head.

    other=/dev/hda1
    label=win2k

    /dev/hda = win2k hard disk u use the bare hda cause it makes it look at the mbr of that disk for a boot record.

    then just run lilo at the promt and reboot. should be cool.
