OK this is a complete waste of a thread and bandwith but im bored... anyway... i heard an ad on radio the other day for Pound City... i thought oh yeah i have seen them.. one in Blanch i know of and more dotted around no doubt... anyway i was thinking about the name.. why are they still call pound city.. There is no such thing as a Pound... Now it could be down to cost.. the cost involved in changing a name can be very high.. also Euro City sounds like either a 2nd hand car dealer or a sleezy X rated video store...

    Anyone else notice or care?

I think its pretty sad that you could only associate the word Euro with porn or second hand goods!

    Euro reminds me of yo-yos.
    Or "YORE. OH."

And yes, i would associate it with porn and 2nd hand goods.

Hmm better still combine both second hand goods and Porn and what do you get?

Euro City - The second hand porn shop!!

    WTF ???

You could't really call it a euro store - what can you sell for just one euro ?

Theres one in Monaghan that changes its name to Euro Central. i thought it was the same nationwide.

Well not eveything in a pound shop cost just a pound anyway... many items, in fact, cost 2 pounds or maybe 3 items for 2 pounds. One I saw some items being sold for 1.50 ....

    ;)

There was one called pound saver, they could change to Euro Saver without silly 2nd hand porn comments lol

There's one in Monaghan? That's news to me.

I think I've stopped looking around though in Monaghan, there's nothing interesting to see in the towns, I just put my head down and drive and hope that I'll be out soon.

Ah Monaghan ain`t that bad, well maybe it is. But theres not as many skangers/knackers than other places

True, very few knackers, and a pretty safe place. Just incredibly dull :).

I used to work in a Pound City. My first job, I got 2.50 an hour. I had great fun anyway.

Some clever competitor in Cork changed their name to EuroCity as the euro came in, so they can't call themselves eurocity down here.

you`d have thought they`d have registered the possible names or decided ages ago. Surely they are a franchise of some sort, so how can they have differnt names in diff counties.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,025 ✭✭✭yellum

They're not a franchise, they're owned by some very astute and rich businessmen.

Make the crap for 1p, sell it for a punt. Nice markup.

i dunno about poundcity, but what seriously worries me is the demise of penny sweets. These were an institution, and one of the corner stones of our society, and now they're gone,in the blink of a eye, just another victim of our rampant consumerism and such forth.

Well penny sweets ceased to be when you could no longer buy one for a penny ;)
