I just thought I'd post a thread on the subject of Slipknot as I thought it might make an interesting discussion.

I'm mainly looking for answers from people who like them. I'm not slagging any fans off or anything. I'm just wondering what the hell is it that I'm missing.

I mean to me it just sounds like a bunch of guys dressed as gimps making a loud noise that can't be made out. But loads of other people seem to love them. I just want to know what is it that makes you guys like it. Is it because your friends like it and you just wanna look hip in front of the homies in the hood etc.?

Would I be right in saying that most people that like them are aged 13 and younger?

What's with the dressing up as gimps thing?

Wouldn't it be much cooler to wear a Rolling Stones T-shirt instead of one with Gimps and clowns on it?

Personally i used to hate slioknot for a while , I am still not a mad fan or anything but give me a couple of months and i think i just might be . first i heard some live stuff by them and i thought it was utter shi*e , but then i listened to a song called "spit it out " , i thought it was great so i got a loan of the album from a mate , they are actually addictive , i didnt want to give the album back .Once you listen to them for a while , you will get really into them , well at least thats what happened to me , . I would`nt exactly say they dress like gimps ,i think they just want to get recognised some how , and maybe the masks and stuff do this , people obviously recognise it , just look at mushroomhead who tryed to rip the look off , they were spotted straihgt away and branded slipknot wannabes , so obviously their doing something right . Oh yeah i am 18 not 13 , so i guess not just 13 year olds listen to them , i guess its a matter of taste , they are just one of those bands that you either love or hate .also i think no to the rolling stones t-shirt for meself anyway!

    1) Yes.

    2) Its a way of making easy money through making shíte music. In other words a gimmic.

    3) Naw... something like Venom, Hellhammer or some other classic METAL band. Not Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath because they are known throughout the world. Some of the lesser known ones should get the credit like Venom etc. .

[edit]I fecked up on this post[/edit]

I like em,im not 13,but not far off,15. They dress up like 'gimps' because they cant be arsed trying to look diffrent each time they appear, they always wear boiler suit's and the mask, its actually because they dont want an image...... If you listen to the songs they arent just screams a lot of it rocks. Unfortunately a lot of their songs also suck, its usually the cr4p section of songs people hear and judge them by. If you want to know what your missing listen to the following songs (these r my fave slipknot songs) Wait and Bleed,Left behind,Me Inside, Despise, only one. (Sic),spit it out,Liberate banana's, and Prosthetics are all also pretty good. Stay away from 'Slipknot' (thats what the songs called...) and a few others that i dont have on my playlist and cant remember :) I also dont give a shat about the whole 'cool' image,i honestly cant be arsed dressing up in chains and all that other sh*t. If you want some info and lyrics on them here is a good site.

ps: pornapster, not all famous metal bands suck, maybe if you tried listening to them you might like sme of them....... also i hear you like pantera, their hardly unheard of.

    HAHAHAHAHA!
They wear the mask to be anti image!?!?!
    HAHAHAHAHA!!!

So, by each member having their own themed mask, that is in some way being anti image!?
    It's the best image yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

That was the plan anglewhore, but alot of pople thought it was cool so............. Also Slipknot arent the 1st mask wearing band, there have been several before them, if you look on that link it names a few of them in the FAQ.
Btw i will now say that 90% of slipknot fans are arseholes, please dont stereo type us because of the majority :)
A perfect example of how big of arseholes most slipknot 'fans' are,a guy in my school (13years old,how origional ;)) wore slipknotty stuff all the time after school (the iowa sweater, the chains, the spiked armbands, chains etc) and claimed to be a mssive slipknot fan, but then for a laugh i decided to ask him to name 5 slipknot songs, after a bit of hesitation he named 1,ironically the one everyone has heard of, Wait and Bleed.I also done this in the middle of the school bus and pretty loudly so everyone could hear, he promtly stopped with the slipknot image and everyone laughed at him for the duration of the bus journey :)

I listen to Slipknot now and then, I have quite a few tracks at home, much to the horror of my missus and am also over thirty!
I read an interview with them one time and the question of the masks came up; they replied that with so many attempts at trying to get a recording deal and failing they became what they thought of as an invisible band that no one would see.... so they wrote some new material wore masks and low and behold go the recording deal and it went from there (something like that anyway).

I used to ****ing DESPISE Slipknot up until last year when I saw them live at the Ozzfest in the UK. I was sitting there getting a henna tattoo done, and it just kinda hit me, "This band is really good!"

They *are* actually quite melodic if you take the time to listen to their album and not the singles, which I haven't particularly liked (till the Iowa singles)

So what if they wear masks. At least they don't go round like poncey boyband fags and they look a little different. Yes, a lot of their fans are little baby rockers, and I hate them just as much as you, most of them seem only to be into the 'shock factor' than the music.

And by the way, oldyellar, Mushroomhead have been around and wearing masks for _years_ before slipknot even came into being.
Besides, their masks are totally different. Next you'll be saying Mudvayne are ripping them off too??

Anyhoo, I shall be going to see the 'knot in Belfast, they rock IMO.

I don't anyone needs to answer this question, we all know the answer deep down in our hearts.

They suck ass. The only thing they're "good" for is little 12-year-olds that want to piss their parents off by liking "evil" music. Marilyn Manson's too obvious nowadays apparantly. So go for Slipknot.

Slipknot are the perfect example of how you can do really well in life with just a good image and no actual content.

Koneko - i'm 21 and I quite like slipknot....does that make me immature then? I agree, most of their young fans only like metal and so called 'shock metal' to rebel against their parents, but I quite like slipknot, and while I have black hair, tattoo's and piercings, I aint a central bank kid :)

As for pornapster, I bet ya go to Valhalla in Fibbers, *puts earplugs in ears* and LIKE it :OP

For Christ sake man! Did I say that any famous metal band sucked? No I didn't! I said that there are alot more classic metal bands who deserve their names in the limelight. Not the same old Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Led Zep t-shirts on new bands all the time. I love Sabbath, Zepplin and (sorta) Maiden, but you can't have them growing all the time and having other bands suffer in the process.

Are you crazy? Pantera are bigger than Slipknot in the US. If your so smart... Who got first ever metal number one single in the US? That should show you how many people are into their music. Plus the fact that all or almost all their albums have gone platinum.

Cowboys From Hell - Platinum (Almost double)
Vulgar Display of Power - Triple Platinum
Far Beyond Driven - Double Platinum (Almost Triple)
The Great Southern Trendkill - Platinum
101 Proof Live - Platinum (or almost Platinum)
Reinventing the Steel - Platinum (since last month :) )

I liked their first release 'Wait and Bleed', but after hearing their album, I didn't bother trying to like them. I think they've just been lucky. The scapegoating of Korn and 'selling out' of Limp Bizkit let them fill the 'nu-metal old-skoolers' spot, and build up their following. I don't like them as people though. The Clown one (the guy who does nothing) is basically the leader and has a warped ethos. Bit like Marilyn Manson. While highly intelligent, he has a slightly distorted view of reality/people/life, so I tend to dislike them more when he goes off on one of his preaching rants in an interview. I respect them as artists though - they have stayed true to their goals.

    :)

Hmmm I never really understood the idea of being a "fan" of a band or "hating" a band.

Personally, for me Radiohead and Orbital are great bands but somtimes (and in the case of Radiohead alarmingly regularly) they totally SUCK ASS. It happens when artists try something new and different. Sometimes its not for YOU (others might find it a work of genius).

So, Slipknot are not my cup of tea. I havent liked anything they have put out since they started (though a few people I know are mad "fanz"). However that doesnt mean that they *couldnt* produce a song I liked and to prove that I kinda like My Plague (their latest "tune").

So my point is, its meaningful to argue that you dont like a song, or even (at a stretch) an entire album but to say you dont like a band and will never like anything they do is kinda restrictive.

I have to say the likelyhood of them producing another tune I like is low but then I'd have said that before My Plague...

    DeV.

God I really despise slipknot. The idea that a band could produce one good song is really laughable. What about the rest of their music? If a band had one bad song I’d understand. But a whole cd? I think the count is 2 now?

Their music is way-overproduced, and has an almost mechanical sound to it, and it’s way to slick, it sounds just like their record company wants it to sound like, NOT the way the band want it to sound like.

Traditionally metal bands had VERY good production, but slipknot are over-kill and the whole we don’t have an image thing is a farce.

In my opinion they have brought metal back YEARS in the eyes of the general public, and it’s sad to see really when you think of all the real talent out there
    ah well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Who are the 'Real talent' then, Ruaidhri?
Slipknot might not be way out of leftfield but at least they're a little different to the generic crap that is played most of the time, even MTV2 is going the way of kerrang, down the tubes.
    B-O-R-I-N-G!

Do you want a list? There are tons of bands like In Flames (who have toured with Slipknot last year), The Haunted, Arch Enemy etc. etc. who I think are away better than Slipknot but seem to fail to get the attention they deserve. They always put on amazing shows but maybe if they wore masks and **** they'd probably be some of the best bands in the World. In my opinion Slipknot definately ripped off Gwar as far as the costumes and stuff go. However Gwar didn't get the attention they deserved either because their music was just far too cheesy for MTV etc to show. And Slipknot by saying "fu<k" every ten seconds get that spot because "fu<k" seems to be a very trendy word nowadays in the music industry (eg. Limp Bizkit, Eminem).

well read pornapsters post. then think about for a while.
metal is a naturally underground genre of music,so do you actually think a (real) metal band would sell out and, with that their dignity.
it's a ****ing shame that real metallers have to put up with "so you listen to slipknot?" ****. **** that. i'd prefer colonic irrigation than listen to them whiney bitches.
their lyrics are CRAP,their music only moderatly complex.
go listen to real metal bands( go to ánus.com and read all you want about the real bands that pioneer this genre)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Perhaps you're reading between the lines and seeing things that aren't there? I never said slipknot were the best band of all time, nor that they were genius', I said that I think they're a pretty good band, they aren't my favourites, but I wouldn't call them ****, and I think they put on a good live show.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I'm 24 and I listen to Slipknot and quite enjoy their music. I doubt I could put a finger on it, but it's probably the energy the music gives off that makes me like it.

I really do not like being told I have no taste or that I'm 13 because of the band I listen to.

It's different strokes for different folks - remember that. DeV said it best:
So, Slipknot are not my cup of tea. I havent liked anything they have put out since they started (though a few people I know are mad "fanz"). However that doesnt mean that they *couldnt* produce a song I liked and to prove that I kinda like My Plague (their latest "tune").
You shouldn't get too hung up with a band, when it's all about the music folks.

Oh yes, I really wish people would stop saying that Mushroomhead are Slipknot wannabes - Mushroomhead were doing it a long time before Slipknot were even heard of. Also, Gwar were doing it before that, so will these people please get a clue?

MTV2 has been going downhill for the last 2 years. Ever since it changed from M2 really....

Now, in a slightly more sober state of mind...

I can't really agree with DeV.
I can't agree with anyone here!

    Why?
Because there is no right or wrong answer.
There is more than just one way of looking at things.
And that's what makes things interesting.

I hate it, you love it?
Does that mean one of us is wrong?
    Hardly!

    It's all personal opion.
    But remember...
    *NEVER* mistake opinion for fact.

Sorry if i mis understod you in my last post pornapster, but you didnt make it very clear.

And i think in 10 years time pop music will keep getting worse, it will probably be R&B, rap and dance. (which personally i cant stand) But isnt this thread getting a little off topic? it started about slipknot now its about the future of the whle music industry.

ps: I will always prefare In Flames to Slipknot :)

I'm 24 and have liked slipknot since they came out. All of the singles they have released are all watered down mixes of the original songs off the albums, so that may be a reason that people think that they suck ass. I just like their music because I think its got some depth (awaiting a tirade of hate mail after saying that) and that it makes a statement. Its not just meaningless yelling and bawling, unlike a lot of shout-first-sing-later bands out at the moment. If you get yer hands on one of their albums and listen to the second half of the album, I'm sure you would be pleasantly surprised. Only pity is, that they had to take back their best song. When I bought their first album, it had a song called 'Purity' on it. After launch, the song was deemed too controvertial because its about a real girl who was abducted and murdered a few years ago in the states. Song was then removed from latter versions of the first album, but I still think that 'Purity' is their finest moment, a great mix of heavy-ass geetarz and some friggin' eerie vocals during the chorus, and the classic lyric of "You all stare but you'll never see whats really inside me". My vote, Slipknot are a great band. AND I have seen them live too, and they more than cemented that fact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Maybe the <Durst-ism>haters</durstism> here are only judging them on their singles and the 'Slipknot' album. Personally, I much prefer Iowa, especially the last song 'Iowa', it's a really lovely song, nice to listen to when falling asleep :-)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I've heard both full albums, and even some of the original self released effort.

And by "Heard" I don't mean, a friend had it on, or anything.
I mean I got the album and listened right the way through the whole thing.

    Thankfully, I could exchange it.

alot of people are spouting on about how most of the 'knot fans are 13 year old kids who only like em cos they are "cool" and whatever.
what about the people who hate them.. alot of people only say they don't like them so as to appear "cool" and not be grouped with "those 13 y/o central bank kids".
personally I think they're ****e, but I don't really care either way, "wait and bleed" is a good song, have it on cd somewhere (the single). but i never really liked the others, *shrug*

You are f*cking joking right? I just downloaded it after you saying it's lovely thinking that it's going ot be a slow paced ballad or something.

It's as crap as any other Slipknot **** I've heard! Christ I wouldn't be able to sleep if that was being played through all hours of the night. I'd probably get a more peaceful sleep by jumping off a bridge!

I sold the two Slipknot albums I had over the weekend (and it was to some 11 year old). Got face value for em! :D

Now I'm going to get some decent CD's.

Yes I do agree that Wait and Bleed was a good song but they need consistancy on all of their albums. All of their albums are half assed attempts at making a record. Every single song needs to be perfect for an excellent cd. I'm currently listening to "Ten" by Pearl Jam at the moment, now compare the consistancy on that cd to either of Slipknots cd's...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

I cant disagree that their good songs are very inconsistant, i have downloaded about 25 of their songs but only have 8 on my laylist (because the rest of the songs sucked, so i deleted them :o). If they would get one album without all of their cr*p songs i would defo get it, but their current albums are usually 3 good songs and 8 cr*p ones :(
