i'm thinking of buying a scooter or moped because my usual form of transport (commonly known as the Fingal Flyer) is getting to be a pain in the ass.

any recommendations for particular models to buy. also as I know sweet fanny adams about these machines any advice would be welcome.

    Thanks

A Bus Eireann bus driver !!!!

Well, seeing as you're a bus driver, you know already what's on offer, even though you don't know it.

Basically, you have two choices. You can either look like a knacker, or you can look like a guy on a scooter.

Knackers generally buy scooters from aprilia, or another famous racing brand. They are scooters that try to look cool by making the body sleek, and minimalist, but at the end of the day they're still only 50cc. For added knackerness, you can get body colours in a variety of luminous shades, and engines with loudness varying from 90db to 150db. Louder engines are only more annoying, not faster.

Guys on scooters generally buy vespas or similar bikes. These bikes have that retro scooter look, and let people know that you're commuting, and not trying to be cool. In my experience, other road users tend to hate vespa owners less. It might look retro, but hey it's only 50cc.

I would say go for a 125cc motorbike. OK, you have to get a provisional licence again, and your insurance is more, but it's bags more fun, and no-one will think you're a knacker. Plus it would give you a new perspective of the city centre traffic, and if you need to make a trip out of Dublin, it's safe to do so without your engine overheating, or without it taking you 6 hours to get to Westmeath.

    :)

Hey i resent that knacker remark... i did not have a vespa, it was a sleek type one and im no knacker! I got it as it was all i could afford at the the time.. fist job and all... only making £7,500 PA at the time.. as soon as i got out of that and into a real job i got a car and never looked back!

Ah yeah but that was back before they became an icon of knackerdom. £7,500 PA? When was that, back in 1990?

I would recommend the honda x8rx , i had this for two years and i didnt get a bit of bother with it , its very reliable and easy on petrol . when you get it first it will be restricted to only do 30 miles an hour but once you get 300 miles on the clock , you can take it back and get them out and then it will do 50 miles an hour , when i bought mine it was brand new and cost 2150 pounds , I just traded it in the other day and got 1500 euro for her , the guy recommended the newer honda x8rs which is also 50cc and supposed to be good and reliable which is what you want and it retails at 2650 euro. the older honda x8rs is a very good little scooter and cheaper than both of the above i think .honda are a very reliable make and from my experience i would steer well clear of suzuki`s , my first scooter was a suzuki and it was back in the garage more often than i was driving it , fair enough the honda`s might be that bit dearer but there the most reliable bikes on the road and you should be able to get a good deal on a second hand one .

I happened across a review the other day of a gilera DNA 50, that's not really a scooter yet not really a motorbike. It still classes as group 1, but is only about 10mph shy of my marauders max speed, so you get a lot for your cash.

    Gets my recommendation! :)

Ahh Stephen ya beat me to it. I was about to mention the Honda Shadow. My sister had one some years ago, lovely machine it is. You can get it in 50 or 90cc versions but from messin around with my sisters one I found even the 50cc one has a lot of power. Better for the inner city of course... you'd feel like a bit of a snail going along the dual carriageway at 35mph :D

If I was a moped/scooter lover rather than a custom bike lover, the shadow would be my choice. hubba hubba :D:D:D:D

I had a Yamaha Aerox back in 2000' Bought it brand new and used it for 2 years without the slightest bit of trouble. Fantastic scooter and when you took the restrictors off the exhaust it could do 65kph:)

You could go for an old skool look and buy a Vespa or whatever..
