does anyone have any suggestions regarding which cpu cooler i should get. im buying a Abit KX7-333 Motherboard VIAKT333 and a AMD Athlon XP 1800+, so it has to be compatible with both.

since the pc is in my room and quite close to my bed, the noise levels are very important but that doesnt mean im willing to wake up one morning to find my cpu fried :) oh yeah, easy to install since i brake everything my hands touch. thanks for the help.

neng and coolermaster make good coolers. Don't get a ceapo one, I bought a box of budget coolers a while ago, and the little hinge thingy on the spring was missing....when I called my supplier about it, they told me that is how they are sold these days, you have to use alot of force to get the spring to catch on the notches on the zif socket!

for the FCPGA packages, you risk damaging the core or even the mobo, not worth the risk in my book. buy a quality item and you'll be happier in the long run.

i can just imagine the noise right now :) i was recommended AX7 before but i cant have something inside my computer that makes so much noise.

    I have a GlobalWin WBK68 Socket A from http://www.marx-computers.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi

Used with Artic Silver on an Epox 8kha+ board with an XP 1800+ and the temp remains between 35-45oC.
Nice and quiet too. My PC is beside my bed also and I have no probs sleeping.

Get the AX7 or an Alpha PAL 8045.
    I've got a Alpha with a 7v Delta running a XP1900 @ 1.73 with +.1v and its idling at 36*c and maxes about 40*c.
Its usually 12*c higher than the motherboard.
AX7 is ment to be better but that uses a clip which i wouldn't trust with a sink that size.
The alpha has its bolt system which works really well if your mobo is supported

Then dont get the Delta fan, there are 2 fans available for it and the Delta is the more expensive one.

...have you considered a Zalman Flower? It's sitting on the same page that Saruman pointed to above (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Other_CPU_and_System_Coolers_18.html) and will be the quietest you can get, most likely. Even the 92mm Papst fan it comes with is nice and quiet, and even comes with a speed controller (read: variable resistor) so you can slow it down and speed it up 'til you're happy and your CPU is just cool enough.

Personally, though, I have the Taisol CGK760092 copper-bottomed jobbie (on the same page, just above the AX7) - it's a grand HSF, very easy to fit, and although it comes with a low-profile 60mm Delta fan it's not at all noisy. Plus the price is great. It keeps my old Duron 800@1000 nice and cosy (38 at full tilt) in a case with no other ventilation to speak of.

Another thing you might like to consider (in the name of keeping the noise down) is some PaxMate sound absorbent matting - see http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Case_Related_Accessories_36.html (it's the first item on the page).

    Hope this helps,

Gadget, i have never used the matting but would that not act like an insulator and increase the temp of the PC? Or is it made od some material that can avoid this?

Quite right, Saruman, it will be a little bit warmer in the case with matting in it - however it will make it a good bit quieter too, and I thought that was more important considering the original post.

About the only thing you could use that would be good at both dissipating heat and deadening sound would be a honeycombed baffle - probably made of aluminium - surrounding the entire PC inside the casing. However, this is just a little bit less than feasible, sadly...

Escuse the pun in the following post:

Now this is a water cooled PC!!

I got a great one from it direct for €53. All copper, low noise fan. Nothing but a mild hum under there now. :)
