I cant remember where i heard this, but has anyone else.

Apparently George Lucas already has the entire Star Wars saga written. But when he went to make a film of it, it was too long, so he had to half it. He then found each half was too long, so divided the book in three. But once more, each part was too long, so he repeated the process with each part, ending up with 9 parts, the 3 trilogies.

anyone else ever heard this?? Sounds more like an urban myth than anything

Could be wrong here, but from what i remember episodes 4 - 6 were originally intended to be one film but due to the length and financial strain it would take to film, lucas decided to split into 3 instalments. (empire strikes back and return of the jedi kung fu masters probably wouldnt have been made if it were not for the unanticipated success of the original, cos lucas made a couple of flops financially like thx1138 with francis ford coppola, film studios were hesitant to invest).

He always intended to go back and do a prequel trilogy but he only wrote a rough draft of what it would be like, alas no third trilogy has been dreamt up anois.

It's a myth allright. Caesar Bojangle is right - Ep 4 to 6 were meant to be one film. george always wanted to do the prequel trilogy, but he only writes the story just before filming. At present he is writing EP3, and filming will not be too far away.

Lucas had the basic idea behind the various stories written but not the screenplays for each movie which he writes prior to filming. He originaly planned to make 9 movies but later deceided to just make 6 due to him not expecting to live that long.

The writing of Star Wars goes back as far as 1974. Lucas started writing the saga as one movie but found that the universe he was creating was simply too big for one screenplay. From what I heard it was eventually divided into 6 parts (not nine as anoraks seem to be saying more out of hope than anything else) and he choose to start the series at part four because he felt that viewers would get more involved with the story if they were dropped right in the middle of this universe rather than introducing them to SW right at the begining. TPM clearly proved this to be a correct decision.

Well Pigman by your statement Lucas himself must be an anorak as HE has stated in many interviews the he is no longer planning on making episodes 7,8 and 9,which WERE ment to be part of the original planned storyline,as he wants to relax a bit and not spend his last remaining years on this planet making movies he has spent most of his life working on.

Get your facts right before spouting such misinformed and incorrect opinions.

Weew! Get out your handbag! Did I touch a nerve with that 'anorak' comment? Sorry HandSolo! I'm just stating what I read. If its wrong then I don't honestly care.

By the way "Get your facts right before spouting such misinformed and incorrect opinions." is a rather stupid thing for you to say. Are you saying I can make up whatever lies I want as long as I know what the truth is? Not very helpful but cheers!

Really? Are they? Then regardless of the fact that I am from the same village (two L's) as you it doesn't mean I have to do your job for you. You're already far too good at it as things stand.

i can't believe no-one has talked about this before!

when i was young i had nine star wars books.
    1 - 'the trade federation'
    2 can't remember
    3 can't remember
    4 - 'a new hope'
    5 - 'empire strikes back'
6 - 'return of the jedi'
7 - 'the mists of' something
    8 can't remember
9 something like 'the dark side attack '

they are from the late seventies/early eighties, and they each came in threes (1-3, 4-6, 7-9)

i have 1, 4-7, and probably one other still hanging around and the attic somewhere.

as far as i know all of these books were released before return of the jedi and they all have similar plots to the films. does anyone remember anything similar?

they were little paperbacks, like penguin books (but not...)
they were all co-written by lucas, or at least he was given credit.

    anyone?
