Whats the rules regarding the goalie's ?

Like when the goalie from Paraguay takes his free kick can one of the defenders claim to be the goalie in a sort of last man back job or what ?

Obviously it doesnt work that way but why ?

Does anyone know how a player makes the ref aware that he is teh current goalie

Wearing goalkeeping gloves and a different colour jersey to the other players on your team usually helps.

No. If the goalkeeper is out of the goal that's up to him. Chilavert (the Paraguayan goalkeeper) is unusual because he usually takes their freekicks and penalties. If whoever they're playing get behind him with the ball after he's gone up for one of those, Paraguay are in deep $hit.

just wondering if swapping the goalkeeper for an outfield player during the match is a substitution

I've never seen it happen. Usually it works the other way round that an outfield player is subsituted for a 2nd goalkeeper after the first one is sent off.

Although I'm sure it's legal substitution. Take the VERY UNLIKELY scenario where both (or all three) goalkeepers get injured in a match. The final "official" goalkeeper would be subbed for an outfield player. Then the team would have 11 outfield players and one of them would be elected to be the new goalkeeper.

However I think to answer your question there is a rule that someone DOES have to be the goalkeeper at all times.

as far as i am aware,an outfield player can replace the goalkeeper if he is injured or sent off without it counting against substitutions..However i assume the referee has to formally stop play whilst the designated player dons jersy and gloves. If a goalkeeper goes down injured whilst the ball is in play,if another player picks up the ball it will be handball.

No, you can't switch goalkeepers on the fly - as TwoSheds says, if a Chilavert free kick is blocked out and kept in play, he just has to leg it back to his goal as fast as possible :)

Outfield players that are currently on the pitch can switch to goalkeeper though, they just need to put on the necessary kit and stuff. I'm pretty sure Ronnie Whelan did it for Ireland once ages ago.

Yeah if you bothered to read the question you would of noticed that I was asking something else.

what Mr Two Sheds said, but to reitterate NO.
Schmichael used to go up for freekicks at man u and to see him scampering back goalwards as his team lost possession and the opposition tried to lob him was a great moment of football entertainmentOf course occasionally the gamble would pay off but essentially thats what it is a gamble, that your team can make the extra player count before loosing possession.
Obviously it doesnt work that way but why ?
Because it would be wrong and impossible to enforce, for example if a goalkeeper rushes out of his penalty area to tackle a striker grobelar style and fails but an outfield defending player clears the ball on the line with his hand, can he claim to be the new keeper because his keeper is not in the area, what if there were two defenders on the line, how do they communicate to the referee which one is the new keeper, whilst the play is in progress?

The player makes the referee aware that he is replacing the goalkeeper by exchanging jerseys (and possibly gloves)with the keeper during a formal break in play.As far as i am aware the previous keeper would then be required to leave the feild of play to prevent time wasting muppetry, otherwise each player on the team could each take numerous turns in goal prolonging a match indefinately.
