So I suppose we just sit back and pray the Germans hammer the living bejaysus outta the Cameroons then??? 1-0 Germany would count as "hammering" for these purposes.

Was the match any good? And who scored?

Damn consulting for a bank in a foreign country which isnt in the World Cup :(

Nope it was a dire match, germany totally tried to kill it after they scored, and robbie keane scored the equaliser in the last minute.

It was a close thing... thank God for extra time... dont usually watch football but was hooked today.. I set up a projector for the office and the whole place errupted.. no work done when we scored.. or much for the whole day so far!

    Sweet!! Well done Ireland

I wouldn't say dire... we had alot of chances on goal, but our defence wasn't great at all, and we just didn't seem to have the same pace as the Germans. The goal was a grand goal, what difference does it make if it's in the last minute... determination is the word. I say well done.

I thought the exact same when we played Cameroon. Are these two exceptionally fast teams, or is the Irish team lacking pace in general?

    Not that pace is everything.

Oh - and not to put a damper on things, but unless Germany beat Cameroon, my calculations say that second place will be decided on goal-diff...which doesnt fill me hugely with hope. This, of course, assumes that everyone will beat Saudia Arabia, which isnt unreasonable considering the 8-0 they recently produced. On the other hand, several minnow teams have produced very surprising results.

Fekkit....Ill just hope anyway. Its more fun :)

and at half time,I thought they should have been swimming home with bricks round their necks.

    w00000000000000000000000t!!!

Bring on Saudi, our ticket into the next round :D

Well they're both favourites anyway. They're both of a higher standard than us IMO, but we played very well against them considering.
Hopefully we'll whup Saudi anyway, and yeah it's better fun to hope :)

No, we are a SLOW team. Apart from the great Duff, who can both run fast and keep the ball under control at the same time, a quantum leap forward in Irish football. I really think they should play him on the wing, though, instead of the awful Kilbane, so we could put someone else like Connolly or Quinn upfront with "R. Keane" (as his shirt helpfully identifies him).

True, but now at least there's a bit more motivation for Germany and Cameroon to try and beat one another. But it does depend on how many Cameroon get against the Saudis.

I too had a pc card and a projector setup in work, and the whle room just erupted when Robbie got the goal!

Whew! that was cutting it close .. but 1 thing for the Irish, they never give up!

I see Cameroon beating the saudis 2moro, so i think we need to beat the saudis by 1 goal more that then Cammeroons, then we can forget about the result of Germany cameroon!

there's no way the saudis can play as bad as they did against germany.....

Not only do they deserve the result, I think they deserved to win the game over 90 minutes. From the moment they went a goal down they were the better team on the pitch. The Germans retreated, kept 11 men and their mascot behind the ball, and just tried to be difficult. What impressed me most is the way the players' heads never dropped after going 1 down. They just kept their nerve, kept playing good positive football, and by the hour mark, it was only Kahn who kept the Germans in the match, not once but twice (and almost 3 times, but thankfully not :P).

If not for Ollie Kahn, they'd have won, as it is, as long as the result of Cameroon v Germany isn't a draw, they'll qualify with a win over the Saudis...anyone who believes that such a result is anything but a formality probably doesn't know much about football. But still, if we could beat Portugal, who knows? Go USA!!!

    We'll beat em all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭nasty_crash

    Come on the Irish!!!

great result!! but at the end of the day we should have won the game!! only for KAHN!!!!! jesus he even saves shots with his arse!!!!! Duff should have put that away!!!

Also did any1 notice that Breen and Harte had terrible games!! Breen thought he was david beckham and kick long crossfield passes!!! come on!! Staunton is good at it!! but Breen!! he is a joke!! bring back kernaghan!!!! and Harte had a terrible game!! i cant see him playing against Saudi Arabia!!!

All i want now is for us and Cameroon to win on tuesday!! Beat the Germans and send them crashing out of the World Cup!!!

Then bring on the big boys!! cos we can match any1 now!! Just make those two changes and then Staunton can lift the cup!!!! hehe!!!

I've been listening to the hacks and pundits over the last couple of hours and you'd swear Ireland had nailed Germany 3-0,
not scored a Jack Charlton styled equaliser in the last second.

Steve Staunton was named man of the match by RTE, did he deserve that (I only heard the game)? Its sounds like Kahn was the best player.

Finally, I dont see Ireland beating the Saudis by more than a couple.

    Mike.

germany were well sickened , jesus they just wouldnt play , their whole game after they scored was defence , ireland really deserved it ........it was like that add "they think its all over " and then came the goal and we were all like , it is now sin sin , go on ireland , nice one .

i think it will be one of them moments where evryone remenbers where they were. Unless its surpassed by something else.
    Hopefully it is.

Guess I must be the only guy to think we were bloody awful with terrible passing, over ambitious long balls to no one and generally a few scrappy half chances, one good chance which Duff couldnt convert and yeah a late equaliser which we were all hoping for so much that it makes us forget how bloody awful we played against an average german side (surely their worst in 40 years?). 1-1 would probably be fair but only because the Germans looked like a team playing for a draw, god knows how badly they would have beaten us if they had come out to get a second, or if Klose (who I thought was good though he seemed to fade in and out) had been on the end of a few of the chances that donkey Jancker got.

We seem to have this habit of playing ****e till the other side scores and then going mental with kick and rush (Kilbane is probably the worst winger Ive ever seen- no wonder Sunderland are trying to get rid of him) till we get a moment of luck. We should probably beat the Suadis, probably. But well go out in the second round (assuming the Cameroons and Germans get a suitable result) going on our performances so far - we meet a good team with confidence to take the game to us for 90 minutes (We were fortunate that the Cameroons suddenly got afraid for reasons unknown).

Ian Harte was absolute crap again, i can`t believe how he gets a game tbh. Breen was ok, he won a couple of important headers.

I bet McCarthy wishes the Dennis Irwin bust up thing never happened, i reckon with Irwin and Keane, we`d have easily stuffed cameroon and the Sausage munchers easily.

I don't know why everyone is ecstatic over the result, we were clearly the better team, and we lost 2 points.

Because we were seconds from being most likely knocked out of the World Cup.
Im delighted that Keane scored. He could well score more now.

I still don't see a reason to outrageously 'celebrate' a draw.

yeah that was pretty good. Kahn had a brilliant game for germany! He was man of the match for germany! All we need to now is for germany to beat cameroon, or vice versa and we're through(and of course we need to beat the saudi's)!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

I dont know if we were the better team, like germany if they had pushed up more and attacked they could have easily got 2-3 goals, I was however expecting us to get a goal from germany ****ing up on defense, not from our quick thinking, overall we were lucky to get a draw and while you might say we could have won 3-1 or whatever they had just as easy chances which they messed up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭BKtje

what if cameroon v germany is a draw?
means we still have to beat saudi by more goals than cameroon

I was overjoyed at the end but it was a terrible game!
I reckon theres gonna be a winner in the Germany v Cameroon game so we'll go through anyway assuming we can beat the saudi's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 436 ✭✭sleepwalker

incredible finish to the game, I was in a pub in town and the whole place just went crazy for five minutes when we scored that equalizer probably the best footballing moment for me ever

really annoys me to see people still come out with negative remarks all those players deserve your respect for what they have achieved so far

2-0 win vs Saudi guarantees us qualification

if Cameroon beat Germany or vice versa + we beat Saudi regardless of the score we qualify also

    wan Ireland !

You're smoking too much sh1t mate! Breen had his best ever game for Ireland yesterday and if you didn't notice it then you don't spot much.

Dunphy will have us think that Jancker was a complete donkey but it was the unglamourous combo of Breen and Staunton which kept Klose and the "bald one" at bay for most of the match.

I never really was a fan of Breen to be honest but he's proven himself to be capable player and more importantly a leader on the pitch which any team is going to need if they are to fulfil their potential. Are you reading this Sven?

If you read who his suggested replacement should be...I think he was joking;)

I agree that Breen had a great game though, I was one of his doubters before yesterday.

Breen played well, but we might still regret not using Cunningham, and checking out Babb.
A great result, 1.30 am in a fountain nearly arrested by Spanish Police. Roll on Tuesday.:D :D:D
