serial port not working ?

    just wondering if there is a way to look to see if a serial port is working . its a old pc and the port is used for the mouse ( for those that dont rember ) its refusing to pick up the mouse .

    running win 98

    ...sticking a hardware modem into it? Or (alternatively) use a crossover cable to connect it to another PC and see if the two can talk to each other (if you're using Windows, Hyperterminal will do this; alternatively, something like Minicom for unix will do)

    (Pinout for a crossover cable here.)
