    Cork firm launches satellite broadband

    By Adrian Weckler
    Dublin, Ireland, 19 May, 2002

The race to provide broadband to the small business sector gathered speed last week when Media Satellite, a Cork based company, launched a national satellite-based broadband service. The service will use the Astra satellite system.

Media Satellite's entry level package costs €50 per month (excluding Vat). The service will go into direct competition with Eircom's high-speed iStream internet package, which costs €89 (excluding Vat).

According to Media Satellite chief executive Rory Fitzpatrick, the service will be geared particularly towards the west of Ireland, where broadband for small business is scarce. Fitzpatrick said the company's service would be "the only show in town" west of the Shannon for some time.

Eircom does not plan to roll out its high-speed internet packages in large areas of the west for at least a year. Fitzpatrick said Media Satellite had already taken 50 orders for the service, despite a low key launch.

To use the entry level service, customers will need to have their own satellite dish. For higher scale packages, the company will rent equipment by monthly charge.

Competition in the SME and consumer broadband sectors is expected to increase in the coming months with the launch of several new high-speed internet services. Esat has announced its intention to launch a digital subscriber line (DSL) internet package to rival Eircom's iStream package.

Chorus has said it will launch similar high-speed internet services in Clonmel, Kilkenny, Thurles and parts of Cork next month for under €50 per month. NTL is testing a cable broadband service in west Dublin, which it says will cost €35 per month.

Media Satellite's core business is interactive television, a sector in which it has several large contracts with Irish government departments. Fitzpatrick said that the company hopes to list on the Ofex exchange in London within three months. The company employs 15 people.

I think this was dicussed on the irleand offline forum there af ew weeks ago. Blatent *false* advertising if you ask me. The mention of DSL with anything got to do with wireless or satelitte access is just mental and i dont know where they came up with the idea.
