Ordering a 1mb line

Well my 1mb line is just installed so I’m happy.
But if you thinking of ordering the 1mb from eircom
There is a few things you can do.
First you do not need to pay eircom €900 to install
A router. You can buy your own router
You do not need to pay a Eircom engineer too setup it up

The info you will need from eircom.net is
    VPI (Virtual Path Identifier) 8
    VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier) 35
    Login Name ******
    Password *******
    Type of Multiplexing LLC
    Type of Encapsulation PPPoE
It’s auto DNS/DHCP for your IP
some of your setting might be diff so you
You can check the info by ringing the tech ling at
    1800 460 260
you need to have adsl installed when ringing them.

That is just about all the info that a Eircom engineer enters a router,

If your buying your own router, then one of the better one’s that will work In Ireland is the ZyXEL 643.
you need a dsl modem that has
PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE, RFC 2516)
    G.dmt (ITU G.992.1)
NAT might be usefull if you have a network

When you order DSL a Eircom Ireland engineer will come out and fit a mirofilter on your phone line and check the adsl will work.
then you can plug in your ADSL router and ring the techs just check your settings and that should be it.

    some links
if you looking to buy a ZyXEL the reviwe has a few places you can order from the UK
if your looking at reviwes make sure they use PPPoE, G.dmt (ITU G.992.1)

ADSLguide.org is a UK site and they use PPPoA in the UK but a lot of routers will do both PPPoE and PPPoA
    Reviwe of the ZyXEL 643

I hope thats some help too people thinking about ordering

Just checking: It is still a static address you're getting, even though it's configured through DHCP right?

no. for static IP you need the ip number and more info
I have 4 orderd but they had not come throught when
they were installing DSL, so i just set it to Dynamic DHCP
till i get my ip address, static are easy for anyone with a tiny bit
of network know how to enter.

when you order DSL you will get a call from eircom.net asking if
you want them to do a site survey for the cheep price of €900
they will ask you then if you want static ip's if you do they take a
    few days to come throught

you do not need them to do a survey all they will do is come
too your house pug in the router and enter the info that i gave
in my first post. so for €900 you get a router and some guy to
    enter the info,
or for less that half that price you can buy your own router
and install if for your self.

It's possible for Eircom to configure their DHCP server such that it will always assign you the same IP address - it's a means of giving out static IPs without a tech support headache from muppets that panic after the third click of the mouse. I was hoping that's what they were doing.

How expensive are the extra IPs?

The information supplied is more than helpful especially as I have had a two week battle with Eircom on this issue and even at this late stage I am not sure if I have won.

A 1mb line (assuming its the 1mb/512kbit option) has an max throughput of 128k/sec downstream & 64k/sec upstream.

    Standard package is half that ie 64k/sec d/s & 32k/sec u/s.

    I don't understand this ... why only 128k downstream?

    1megaBIT line = 1024 kiloBITS.

    1024 / 8 (8 BITS to a BYTE)
    = 128

So you get a max of 128kiloBYTES download.

    And the same math, 512/8 = 64kiloBYTES.

Line speeds are generally measured in bits/sec while download speeds are generally measured in Bytes/sec.

Yes it is possible for eircom to do that but there not
you can not get static IP's with out buying the 1mb line
and if your buying that they think your going to order a site
survey (rofl) and their Engineer will install it.
as far as i know the IP's are free

the best that eircom is offering is a 1mb down 256K up
you should be able to get 120K a sec down the max i have got so
    far is 115K a sec :) (56K modem = 4.5K a sec)
upload you should get 30K a sec but i have not tested it yet.
even if the line can Transmit what should be 128K a sec there
is overhead info in the packets sent so you will never get the full 128K a sec

What are gaming pings like to Barrysworld/Jolt/Europe like?

And in game is there much packet loss / choke etc. for cs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,400 ✭✭✭TacT

no loss or choke Mr blonde avg pings are 50-100.

avg download speed depends on the server you are downloading from ;)

max upload I've seen out of it thus far is 26.7KiloBytes a sec.
    max download 104KiloBytes a sec maintained. (www.mirosoft.com/directx81)

    Some observations........

Very Rarely when playing I've come across sudden 400/700pings for a few mins then it seemed to settle right down again  and there was no downloading etc going on, weird.

While downloading provided you aren't using up all your bandwidth you should still be able to maintain a 75-150 ping (depends on the server obviously)
While uploading at 25KB a sec I noticed that our pings were feckered and sat around the 200/300 and gameplay is stuttery as any lag is :(

Overall I'm impressed and think that you definitely get what you pay for, gl to anyone ordering because I was in cafe when the engineer came around and when trying to extract basic information from eircom coyote's head swiftly changed to cherry red colour :D (not funny at the time) for a while when on the phone to the (absolute idiot) sales rep from eircom who was proclaiming "if you pay us whatever we'll do that for you", when all he wanted was the information necessary to configure the package he had purchased. Eircom seem to think that giving out the info necessary to get online qualifies them for a public milking.

Unbelievable that they are gonna charge a couple of hundred euro to put in a few ips and set one or two basic options on the router for that amount of money. If anyone is upgrading do me a favour and when eircom say "oh Sir You'll be so happy to hear we configure and install everything for 900 Euro, it's the bargain of a lifetime, and one not to be missed!" Tell them you know another company that will do it for 200 Euro because this is an absolute JOKE :)

Coyote, where did you buy the Zyxel 643 from and how much did it cost you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,237 ✭✭✭Coyote

    If you're in a hurry, I got mine for ?429 from www.systemhouse.ie.

There are also Draytek routers that are even cheaper but I don't know how good they are. They got a good review on adslguide.org.uk.
