I was thinking of building a new system and getting winXp Pro but there I have a idea/problem.

    1. This system wont be as fast as my winXp home edition machine. Could i swap XP pro on the fast one for winXP HE on the slower machine( it's only an idea).

    2. The scanner I have uses a SCSI controller and the winpXp home edition nearly choked to death when I asked it to take the scanner. It couldn't find the scanner.I have it running on win 98 The epson drivers for it goes as far as win2k. I haven't tried the win2k driver with the winXp home edition, would that driver work

    1. Yep. If you've already activated your existing copy, it might cause problems - an activation crack will solve that.

    2. Should do - best bet is to try it on your existing PC, and if it goes ape, just rollback the old driver.

I know lads that used cracks on Xp only for them to fail and now they have to format their hard disk every 30 days coz they can't find a working crack.

You don't need to crack anything, which would be pointless as Microsoft are taking measures to lock down cracked copies when Service Pak 1 is installed. Anyway, all you need to do is ring Microsoft and re-activate. They'll ask you why and you simply say you have a license for XP Home and a license for XP Pro and you want to swap the licenses between two of your computers.

any cracked versions of XP will be nullified of any updates accessible to user's with registered copies of XP so no security update's etc.

No point with the warez now is there :)

What MS are doing with the updates is likely to be tied to the product key. Anyone using the infamous product key that almost everyone using a dodgy copy of XP is using will be stuck. People using a different key (perhaps generated with that rather ingenious keygen) will be likely to get away with it.

MS have done this before with Office 97 (SP1 blocked installs with one particular product key). Nothing new, nothing to see, let's move on.
