    anyone know a program that will allow me to do this ?

    ...at http://www.virtualdub.org/ will allow you to do this (current version is 1.4.10) - it's brilliant and it's freeware.

    Follow these steps and you should be fine:
    1. Open the first AVI (the one you want at the beginning of your larger merged AVI using "File" -> "Open Video File".
    2. Tell Virtualdub not to attempt to reprocess/recompress the video/audio streams by selecting "Video" -> "Direct Stream Copy" and "Audio" -> "Direct Stream Copy"; when you've done this right, there'll be a little marker beside each of the "Direct Stream Copy" menu entries listed above if you check afterward.
    3. Tell Virtualdub you want to append the second file by selecting "File" -> "Append AVI Segment" and choosing the file you want to add in after the first one.
    4. Select File -> Save As AVI, give it the name of your (new) output file, and let it rip.

    Yup, virtual dub rocks. Ripped the audio out of a divx for me in about a minute :)
