Remember the little debate regarding C3PO and R2D2 and then not recognising Obi Wan's name, and so on...
Just to settle that, here's word from Lucas himself.

    E! News Reveals Droid Spoiler
    Thu, May 23, 02 11:29:25 PM EDT

Diaz tells us that tonight on E! News Live, George Lucas reveals a secret about C-3PO and R2-D2 from Episode 3!
Patrick Stinson: Anakin in Episode One created C3PO. In the original trilogy, C3PO doesn't recognize him as Darth Vader because...
George Lucas: Well, one, his brains have, his memory system has been erased and so has R2's. So, they don't remember anything from the first trilogy. I'm telling you something from Episode 3, but I shouldn't be telling you that, but I think most of the fans already know that.

Give E! News Live some major points for scoring this story!

Like in the Simpsons. uhh a wizard did it

    lol

Ah it's not all that much of a cop out, remember in ep IV when Uncle Owen says "...get their memory erased... they belong to us now". I'm sure Lucas wasn't thinking that far ahead when he wrote that. It seems from various different SW stuff (books, the RPG etc) that it's normal for new owners to wipe their droids memory.

Thats not actually a spoiler.. it was fairly obvious... but at least Lucas will include it and asnwer the question once and for all.

Yes, hence me putting spoiler in brackets... like this-> "Spoiler".
Just though I'd post what Lucas said directly.

It'll settle people asking about it :)
I read the same question (the thread was basically the same as the one here a while back) regarding C3PO and R2D2 and their memory, on another board. People discussing it there too. Seems everyone noticed, heh.
