how much i want Ireland to meet England in the World Cup now so they can really dump them out of the World Cup

but in all fairness what he wrote is true.
pundits only mention us in same breath cos their TV show is on in ireland.
We hate them ,they hate us.
But in last WC we watched England V Argentina and there was a lot on English in the bar and they were confused as to why we all had Argentina jersies on and were singing "argentina argentina "
hehehehe that was fun in portugal in " Linekers bar" :)

Whats wrong with the article?, its exactly right in every respect!

The English have condesended towards the Irish in the past, the Ireland team under Charlton was bloody awful to watch, they are better now, they are just another team, they wont win the World Cup (honest!). And good luck to 'em.

    Where's the controversy...

    Mike.

And this is not some spiteful retribution just because the Irish will not be supporting England.

    Me thinks it is.

[Sarcasim]Oh No! England fans dont support us! How will we ever go on?!?![/Sarcasim]

I dont expect any English person to break out of his narrow nationalistic views and support any other nation than his own anyway*

    * <--- That wasnt very PC. But then again, I dont give a flying fluck at a rolling Donut.

Augmerson, would you expect any Irishman to break of of his "narrow nationalistic" views to support anyone else???

The author is right though, you cant really have a second team. In the end if you are gonna support a second team it might boil down to the likes of Europe vs South America or something like that.
Commentators might show favortism for the likes of Ireland or England on television due to the fact that there is probably a fair few people watching from either country. Like BBC generally when they show an Irish game in the WC will be up for the Irish team. Or on the flip when TV3 show an English club in the CL they are up for them. Although this isnt really the same thing.
I dont expect anybody but the Irish to support the Irish.

[edit]Having said all that the teams I would like to see do well because well I do have a second team are Spain, Nigeria, Argentina and Portugal. Spain before the other.[/edit]

I don't see anything wrong with that article at all.

He might be a little spiteful but by jaysus thats nothing compared to how spiteful we are towards the English team.

the thing that annoys me about england is the fact they think they're one of the worlds football superpowers. Fair enough irelands football was poor in 1994...but at least we qualified for the tournament....:D...and if it's worth anything my second teams are:
    Sweeden
    Nigeria
    Argentina.

the english interest in the irish soccer team doesnt really extend beyond the media.

in 1990 their was some intrest in jack charltons "england B" team
and in 1994 england failiure to qualify required sports pundits to talk up the "special relationship":desperate to make their product "relevent" to a dwindling audience share.

personally having failed the Norman Tebbit Cricket test,i will be mostly supporting holland on the grounds that Edgar Davids with his dreads and hi tech glasses looks a bit like the alien predator.
Before switching alligence to <most likely> Italy or Brazil for the final.

Also next season i will mostly be supporting Arsenal United

In my opinion most peoples second team would be Brazil, basically because they always got to the finals, they win loads and they usually play fantastic football. Irish followers have always needed a second team and their first team namely Ireland has only got to the finals 3 times in total.

Even though Brazil are half the team they use to be and France are now the super power playing super football its very hard to support the arrogant Frenchies.

I personally hope Spain wins for a change.
