    Yep,,

    Seagate Barracuda is the 3.5" form-factor family of mid-range performance SCSI drives with 2mb cache or less....you might be on about Nova-II or another IDE family.

    I guess you learn something new every day. sweet system BTW.
    Hey Stone, do you have any duel P3 motherboards in stock?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 674 ✭✭✭Stonemason

    soz sickboy no not in stock probably get one for you.The thing is thats quite an unusal mboard ie not main stream stuff so most people wouldnt hold them in stock simply because the pc market moves so fast that you could end up with an expensive mb that wont sell and by the time some one does want to buy one its be supassed by about 50 other boards all cheaper.

    Stone, I'd like to say this: you keep sending me out catalogues that make no sense.

    Apparently I can buy an "Intel 3" from you. Nothing else is given in description. Also, you don't state the manufacturer's or the standard (UDMA66/ATA100/etc) of the hard disks.

    People want more information before parting with their hard earned cash.

    Intel only announced the 1.6 / 1.8 Ghz design this week - was your manufacturer being trigger happy.

    Quality control should get it up to 2.0 Ghz by autumn - after that Pentium will be no more. 2.0 Ghz is the degin limit of the current generation of chips and from now on we will be talking about Itanium chips (2.0 to 20 Ghz).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭JustHalf

    Itanium isn't going to penetrate to the desktop market... it's dead in the water. It's a good chip, but Intel are bringing out a better IA-64 based chip quite soon. Later, AMD will bring out their Hammer chips.

    These new chips will probably not enter the desktop market either: it's too much work converting software to work on an entirely different architecture (64bit).

    There *is* a 1.7GHz P4... the 1.6 and 1.8 came out after it.

    I doubt the P4 will be brought out of service at 2GHz. It's specifically designed to operate at speeds in excess of that.

    Believed to be the Intel roadmap:

    wah too many threads about the same thing.. its not Itanium anymore its McKinley, Itanium is basically dead in the water, due to its terrible x86 32-bit compatability compared to AMDs offerings (which improved x86 performance)

    I know justhalf problem is my partner likes to abreivate to the tenth degree which in fairnes to alot of customers makes no odds if they see a intel p3 866 thats as much info as they need those that need more usaly ring and im happy to tell them what they need to know as for the Hdd the same thing applies ill tell people which ones are best for there stystem (usaly based on there age)i.e a 2 year old motherboard is not going to support ultra ATA/100.Im working on the website at the moment and that has more info on each item than most people will ever need.

    Example
    Seagate Barracuda III Ultra ATA/100 40GB HDD (7200RPM)Model-ST340824A
    Seagate’s Barracuda® ATA III disc drives deliver 7,200 RPM and up to 40 Gbytes for mainstream and high-performance desktop applications and ATA RAID. Barracuda ATA III features superior performance, Ultra ATA/100 interface, quiet acoustics, DiscWizard installation tools and Seagate’s comprehensive 3D Defense System. Barracuda ATA III comes with a three year limited warranty.

    Features Benefits

    7,200 RPM desktop performance
    high performance

    Ultra ATA/100 interface
    high performance

    350 Gs nonoperating shock
    toughness

    FDB motor as option
    quiet operation

    3D Defense System
    best reliability

    You should note though, that ata/100 drives are backwards compatible, and will work on systems that support LBA, and which can see the full drive. I recently got a 40gb quantum fireball ls working on a p2 300, with no problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 674 ✭✭✭Stonemason

    Yea i know they are backward compatible.it just seemed a waste of £40 odd quid considering he was going to put it onto an old bx board (about 2 years old).Heres a question for you though?if he bought a 7200rpm ultra ATA/100 and put it on said board would he see any benefit? ok admitedly the disk spins faster but would he be able to transfere the data any faster ?or would the board act as a bottle neck.

    "Intel 3" was the only information given, Stone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,162 ✭✭✭_CreeD_

    Depends really what he's doing. ATA-100 is grand but no IDE drivces actually come close to using it for sustained transfers.
    I have 2x30Gb IBM GXp 75s in a Raid-0 array at home. Together they manage ~89mb/s Burst but 'only' 40mb/s sustained.
    Now the extra bandwidth does come in handy if you have other drives on the same cable but I think in general you'll still see pretty good performance on an ATA-66 controller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Gerry

    Its not a waste putting it on a bx, I ran a 7200rpm maxtor and an ibm 75gxp 7200rpm on my bx ata/33 controller. The drives worked fast and I noticed very little difference when I moved the ibm over to the ata/100 controller on the board. I still run this ancient bx board! Imagine that, its based on ancient 2 year old technology!

    Don't be taken in by the hype stone, as creed says ata 100 is good when you have 2 devices on the one cable, but really you want to avoid doing that anyway.
    Creeds raid array can sustain 40mb/sec, my ibm 45 gig can sustain 30 megs a sec. This means that the bx board will not be limiting the speed of the drive. So, in short, its not a waste of money.

    Apparently, you also stock these items. Remember, these are the only descriptions given.

    -> MOTHERBOARDS
    "JW S/A633 ULTRA"
    -> CPU'S
    "AMD S/A S/370 ORB FAN"
    "800/100 FSB"
    "933"
    -> DRIVES
    "MEMOREX 12X boxed"
    "SONY 8x CLONE Compatible"
    -> SOUND CARDS
    "SOUND BLASTER Ensonic" smile.gif
    "A-WIN S/B 1024 BEATER" *HA!*
    -> MODEMS
    "INT. MRI 56K ROCKWELL 3yr war"

    Please Stone. I find it hard enough to decipher that; imagine what a PC-World lovin' person would think! smile.gif

    Dave

    No offence but how the hell was i suposed to know you had cancer in your family(besides who the **** said cancer was funny so stop putting words in my mouth) it was a joke and in any time apart from these aparantly rabid anti smoking times it would have be mildy amusing.If i had access to all the details they WOULD be displayed but as i have mentioned alot of parts have very vague descriptions which i have to clarify over the phone i also said i was trying to fix this and have be ASKING FOR MORE DETAILS (which have been promised to me in a couple of weeks) if i was given a product code i could find all the info needed but i havent be given even this.If someone wants a part they will usaly phone to confirm at which point i usaly have a chat about what they need it for just in case its not compatible with there system.Lastly as i have also explained i did not make the list up that was done by sales who as an added service send out updated prices and special offer ect ect.Im sorry you feel the need to snipe at us for no aparent reason but the fact remains we are doing our best there are only two of us at the moment we have only been up and running for a couple of (busy)months.If you feel you can do better why not put your money where your mouth is and start your own busines.
