Surprised this subject hasn't come given the publicity...

It appears MTV may be planning an Irish opt-out service of some nature (adverts only, or perhaps some different programmes???) in September.

A competition is currently running via Ballygowan to "Be the Face of MTV in Ireland".

Actual information seems to be sketchy, but twenty people will be invited to the MTV Lick Party in Dublin. Three will end up guest presenting MTV Select in London.

The overall winner will appear in a promo "to be shown on MTV in Ireland" in September.

Does anyone have any futher info? MTVNE's site's press area is password protected (and I don't have an NUJ card). MTV UK's site has nothing. Ballygowan's reproduces the competition info.

Anything off-record can be sent via my email address if you don't want to go on record in the forum.

One futher thing: MTVNE have registered mtv.ie .

Damn, beaten to it! I noticed this today on a bottle of BallyG. I would like an MTV Ireland but what could it achieve? MTV UK & Ireland is cacky enough as it is. Maybe it's just advert optouts with occasional Ireland-only programming? Interesting to see what happens.

I would hope though that if MTV UK & Ireland is seperated that we get to keep Dance, MTV2, Hits and that MTV UK could be added on Sky via Add Channels like Sky One.

i heard somewhere about an MTV UK + Ireland split about a year or 2 ago and it may actually happen now :) . anything other than what we are subjected to at the moment couldn't be much worse. i would be much happier though if MTV Europe came back and replaced all of these MTV regions

2fm are running the competition with them they should have some info on their site.

Atomic TV an idea from Bob Geldof about 3 years ago now.

Does MTV Ireland UK not show Irish adds as an opt out service already?

Most adds are the same now anyway there is no real need for an opt out service.

Note that this Idea of an Advertising otp out service is only a service to Advertisers and not to Irish Viewers its not like C4, UTV or Sky provide an opt out news service for the republic at all, so i dont think that is something to get excited about.

As the topic of the tread is about a planned Irish Opt out service for MTV UK and Ireland.

It is also about the ballygowen Competition, Which is were the opt out service idea came from.

Perhaps MTV plans a opt out service for Ireland. Like The BBC opt out services for regions in Britian like BBC NI.

An opt-out, in terrestrial terms is where a transmitter normally showing a feed from a central network source has that source switched out and a local programme transmitted instead. This is what happens on BBC ONE when transmitting local programmes. RTE tried it in an experiment during Autumn 2000. (UTV, on the other hand, opts-in to the ITV/LNN network feed).

In relation to satellite, the Irish opt-outs on Sky One and News are where Sky tranmitts (from London) an identical play out of programmes and continuity, but different adverts and trailers for the Irish market.

This may be what will happen with MTV, although I would suspect that if a promo (and indeed, there is a logo floating about) is being made, there would be perhaps more.

And no, this isn't the case at the moment. There is only one MTV UK & Ireland feed at present. Viewers may be confused because an "M T V : I R L" breakbumper is occasionally played out. But viewers in the UK see this too, just as we see the "M T V : U K " breakbumper.
