    lo there janey mackers :)

My mate just purchased an imac

    600mhz cpu
    40GB hdd
    256mb ram
and a whole load of other stuff

The gfx card is only a 16mb something or other, what are the upgrade options if any?

He's looking to purchase Adobe premiere and Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and possibly something for video editing purposes.

Anyone know who I should ask or where he can purchase these please and how much it will cost. (he's not too concerned as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg)

The com is used for graphical design and video editing (mainly) apart from the two sites listed with the manual what other resourceful sites are out there for him to make use of?

How expensive are upgrades for his ram/video/hdd?

    Thanks for your time.

oh just remembered, it came with two os's osx and something else, which of these would be better suited to what he is doing?

I thought Adobe Premiere is for video editing?

I use Final cut Pro for editing video and photoshop for... photoshopping! I recommend Final cut, it's great and it'll work nicely with his iMac. He may want to get more memory though, yes. Mac memory is not as cheap as it used to be but he only needs 256k more for now.

Legit copies of Final cut go for €800+ I think, prob the same as Premiere.

he can't upgrade his harddrive, cannae dee that wi' iMacs Jim. But 40gigs is pretty good, he can buy an external drive if he wants.

His iMac comes with osX and os9 (the earlier operating system). If he gets the brand spanking new photoshop and Final cut then he can use osX with them, otherwise if he gets the older versions he would use os9. Its nothing to mind about, he will get his stuff done no matter what.

The main thing is the money, he can get good stuff or really good stuff, not sure how much he wants to spend. for money prices etc goto - www.bigbearsound.com they are a dublin based audio visual mac retailer. They got me my gear and were very helpful and honest unlike practically all shops that sell Macintoshes in dublin (in my experience).

    Hope this helps

Exactly what gordon said. FCP is streets ahead of Premier in terms of video editing. Id also recommend an external hard drive cos the internal 40gb will probably fill up in next to no time. He could *probably* get away with 256mb of ram (if its the old version of fcp) but an extra 256 will speed things up a bit.

You can actrually replace the internal HD but you need to know what you're doing.

I know what I'm doing on the inside of a regulare pc case and so far I've only looked at the guts of 2 imacs, does that qualify me to "know what I'm doing" :o
