Just a request for everyone to get out and vote on Friday. I don't care which way you vote, but please do.

For information, debate and our own polls look here: General Election board

I concur. It doesn't take long. Don't cop out of voting just because you think they're all the same. They wouldn't be the same if more people got off they're asses and voted.

I have bugger all interest in politics, I don't know one party from the other and therefore I am not going to vote.
IMO an ill-educated vote is worse than not voting.

just vote! Ask someone else to give you a rundown & lowdown on the parties involved or go read some of the general election threads..... I used to think to hell with it I won't vote but I've learned it is not the way to go, if anything just make sure bertie doesn't get back into office mmmk!

Ya, everyone write at the end of their ballots I'm voting for myself cause I don't like you!

It has to be accepted. Although since no one would know who you are, you'd better all write down my name instead :)

    But seriously go vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,335 ✭✭✭Cake Fiend

I don't want a "rundown & lowdown", I want to have a good understanding of what I'm doing when I'm submitting a vote.

Let's imagine my single, badly-informed vote tips the scale for whatever party I vote for - they win by one single vote (potentially mine). What if I make the wrong choice? What if, because of my ill-informed decision, we elect a taoiseach I later really wish wasn't in power? In that situation, if I hadn't voted for said taoiseach/party, the situation could have been averted.

On the other side of the coin, if a certain party wins by more than one vote, it wouldn't have mattered a bog whether I'd voted or not.

So I reiterate - no, I will not make an ill-educated vote just for the sake of voting.

I intend to vote for Labour.. they were the only ones (out of 4 different parties) who actually bothered to ask _me_ about the election at my doorstep, rather than "are your parents home" which at 22 I find quite offensive.

(Kildare North, Emmett Stagg in case you were wondering..)

If you dont know who to vote for then spoil your vote it's better than not voting at all, at least this way you are exercising your right to vote.

Whoever has the nicest poster/billboard gets my vote.
Marks will be given for grooming, smile and youthfull complection.
The question is - who's lies and BS do you favour the most?

    Hi Sico,

All you need to know about voting tomorrow:

Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Progressive Democrats all represent the same section of society (more or less), that being the conservative christian majority. It is guaranteed that one or more of the above political parties will be in power next week.

If you are for keeping things pretty much as they are vote for one of the above parties, or don't vote at all.

If you are for a greater voice in the Dáil for alternative points of view, then vote for any candidate or candidates running in your constituency that do not belong to one of the above parties. You needn't worry about electing the wrong person to power, because in reality it will be either Fianna Fail or Fine Gael that will be in true power next week, and despite differences that reach back to the civil war, both parties are pretty much the same when it comes to policy.

    Heya Dabh,

I agree with the spoilt vote idea. It's really a bit of a mis-nomer, it sounds very negative, but effectively you're not really spoiling your vote, ut refusing to choose any of the running candidates.

It's a method of ensuring that you are not being counted as one of the lazy non-voters, but actually as a dissenting but participating member of society.

And I also agree with whoever said vote Green/indo, that's the way I am considering voting.

    Cheers,
    Al.

Rasta, Crime & Health are a *little* more important than how much drinking money you get from the government. That said, no, they don't care about the student votes.

I'm not voting today. I'm registered in Wicklow, and had no way of getting down and back in time for work (unless I got up at 8am. Fúck that).

    :(

The it seems though those FF scum are going to get back in...maybe as a single party govt....and we all remember what happened the last time they were in that position....

It's untrue to imply that non-voters are non-participants in society.

Forgive me, I didn't mean to imply that they were non-participants in society.

What I meant to say was that they are non-important participants in society.

    vote first drink later
    That's my policy.

to all those people who don't want to vote and couldn't care less, your morons.

To be honest, if you are going to force people to vote, there should be a 'none of the above' on the ballot paper.

Got to say this business of putting their ugly mugs on the paper is disturbing - the temptation o draw mustaches is almost overwhelming.

    Anyway, get out and vote.

Thanks Vicky, but I'm not sure it's a compliment...

While politicians get away with claiming to represent "the people".

Heh, what sod all people realise is that you ARE fined for not voting, in a way.

While obviously there's no way of telling who you voted for, the actual electoral rolls are public information; so it's easy to show whether someone voted or not in the last election... And credit check companies use this information to determine your credit rating. It's actually got quite a big influence on your rating.

Refused for a loan? Maybe if you'd bothered to get off your lazy backside and give your once-every-four-years contribution to the running of the country, they might have looked more kindly on your application...

While the register is public information, I'm not sure if the used copies (your name is struck off when you vote) are. I raised the selling of the Register by local authorities to private companies (Dublin City Council to MBNA in this case) on the grounds the collection and use of the information was not for the original purpose it was collected for (Data Protection Act, etc.). The woman in the Franchise Office became very worried when I raised it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

Credit check companies have always been a law unto themselves as regards the data protection legislation. Bear in mind that by applying for a loan or anything, you give your consent for them to probe whatever they want - and your voting history is one of those things.

Even spoiling your vote shows up as "yes he voted". It's worth doing for this selfish reason alone (without getting into the whole issue of it being your duty as a citizen of a free country).

Unfortunately soon peeps may not be able to spoil a vote, if electronic voting is brought in all you can do is choose a candidate or not, there is no ability to register a protest or spoil your vote.
