Japanese riot police preparing for this year's World Cup went head-to-head with mock hooligans on Wednesday, showing off their high-pressure water guns and multilingual boards.

More than 1,000 officers faced off against the hooligans — played by 150 of their colleagues brandishing burning sticks — to show off the high-tech instruments developed for the tournament, which kicks off on May 31.

In addition to the regular tools of the trade like water cannons and dogs, on hand were portable high-pressure water guns and transparent shields made of special reinforced plastic.

"Our assumption is that over 97% of visitors from abroad will be good citizens," said Yasuo Niimi, a National Police Agency (NPA) official in charge of security at the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Korea and Japan.

Officials also demonstrated an electric board which will address troublemakers in six languages, including English, German and French.

The board will tell rioters to "Quiet down"

NARITA — Police and customs officials at Tokyo's Narita airport said Wednesday they have arrested a 31-year-old British national for allegedly smuggling into Japan the largest synthetic drug stash ever.

The suspect was identified as Nicholas Baker

    40 000pills..and cocaine.....
    haru ichiban

Wow.... I wonder if those pills were for all those hooligans coming to Japan in a month..... The chances of a riot will most certainly increase after this incident....The J-police will probably have to use those nets now.....

England's Primeminister Tony Blair has called these hooligans "Brian Dead Louts" . They have spoiled games, caused a huge amount of property damaged, and are responsible for the deaths of many innocent people, every year people lives are destroyed because of these hooligans. Europe actually has some of the worst hooligans, huge gangs of thugs from different countries :Germany, England, Turkey, Italy……..Euro96 and Euro 2000 will be remembered for English hooligans having street battles with riot police. Here I have a few examples of some incidents caused by poor safety or caused by these "brain dead louts".
29-05-1985 BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: A European Champion Cup Final at Heysel Stadium saw 39 people dead, after riots broke out and a wall separating rival fans of Liverpool (English) and Juventus (Italian) collapsed
10-03-1987 TRIPOLI, LIBYA: Fans panicked and feed knife-wielding ruffians thereby triggering a wall to collapsed killing about 20 people. (Police reported only 2 died.)
15-04-1989 SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND: During a FA Cup semifinal game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, 95 people were crushed to death after police opened gates to alleviate crowding outside Hillsborough Stadium, thereby bringing more people rushing into the already filled terrace. Most of the dead were fans trapped against riot control fences ringing the field.
13-01-1991 ORKNEY, SOUTH AFRICA: At least 40 people were killed when fans forced themselves against riot-control fence during a panic to escape small trouble that broke out in the grandstand.
16-10-1996 GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA: A Stampede at the stadium resulted in 78 people death during a World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.
9-05-2001 ACCRA, GHANA: At least 123 persons lost their lives during a stampede. This happened at the National Stadium, after the match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko. Just before these deaths, Kotoko supporters began ripping up seats and hurling them into the track. This seemed to have been out of frustration when Asante Kotoko give up a one goal lead loosing their unbeaten record to Hearts of Oak.
…….In Europe police have photographs and detailed profiles of these offenders but the still succeed in entering stadiums. Japan will need to do much more if they don't want riots in the streets of Sapporo!

Can some one please set up a pOLL

On hooligans and trouble at the world cup?

    Do you expect trouble from?

A Hooligans ( German, English, Argentine, Truk..)
    B Japanese/Korean police ( over reacting )
C Terrorists ( Like Japan's Aum Doomsday or Binladen )
    D All of the Above.
E Nobody ( No trouble at all! )

This a bit silly mate. A few things.

The board will tell rioters to "Quiet down"
I don't know how much you know about hooliganism, but this is comical in the extreme.

The Heysel disaster was caused by marauding Liverpool fans, but given the spanking Liverpool got in Rome the after the previous year's final, the dogs on the street know it was going to go off, and Heysel was possibly the worst ground in Europe (save Richmond Pk) to hold the match in. The safety standards in Heysel were an absolute disgrace, and UEFA admitted as much. Nothing justifies it, but nobody wanted to see people die.

When Liverpool fan lost their lives at Hillsborough, hooliganism had absolutely nothing to do with it. People gathered outside the stadium in large numbers looking forward to the game, wantng to queue long before the gates were due to open. The police opened one gate, and refused to open side crowd relief gates into other pens that could have prevented 2000 people entering a pen made for 500. Anyone out for a fight that day would have been in Nottingham town centre drinking in pubs, mobbing up. Its grossly unfair to put Hillsborough in your pathetic "history of hooliganism", and even after typing this long message, I would not be surprised to see the thread deleted.

Its Tony Blair and his MCWs that have taken football from the fans and given it to the fatcats, bring back terraces and fences if necessary.

That was a bit harsh Bateman, but deservedly so. Brings up some good points though. (Actually only one...Hooliganism during this Summer's World Cup)

I expect the English will be quiter this year than in France. Reason being, France was so close to England, and Japan's so far off, and that bit more expsensive(Although the determind few will undoubtedly head East).

I'm not sure, but do you need a Passport to travel from England to France?

And I hope to God, that Irish fans don't miss behave. The ctype of People who boo'ed Former and present Glasgow Rangers players during Irelands international matches arent they type I'd like to see supporting Ireland out there on the big stage.

Indeed the English will be quiet during this WC. There will still be plastic chair throwing and police baton charges (after all, the British fans can't let down their own hungry media can they?), but there won't be large mobs squaring off in their hundreds.

I would imagine a passport would be needed to go from Englsnd to France, but your point is true, there will understandably be less English than in France anyway, because its closer. However, everyone knows that football hooligans in England are not tower block people like they used to be. Some are travelling to Thailand just to watch the games at a decent time! But it will go off, probably just with the police, but there is a hooligan scene in Sweden, although they probably don't travel as well as the English. Actually, with the exception of oursleves, no other country really does.

I agree that the booing of Rangers players is pathetic, but I would hesitate to call it sectarian. I would hope, however, and guess, that the people who are the staunch Landsdowne Rangers players booing Celtic and Ireland fans would be couchbound for the WC.

I actually think were gonna have a good finals as far as hooliganism is concerned!
Simply because there wont be anyone for the Eng-er-land to fight!
Sure there be some brawls with the Argies and if all else fails they can either turn on the cops or each other but i just dont think therel be vast numbers of german hooligans for them to fight!
Or any other nationalities for that matter.

As for the Irish fans travelling......
Cant even think that there would be any hassle, those middle aged guys with their D4 accents will be far to busy talking over the complexities of the stock market to bother about abusing apposing players!
Ill never forget the guy who rte inteviewd outside the airport after we lost to Italt in 1990!
Complaining that it was his "first and last time travelling abroad to support Ireland" as their plane had been cancelled and they were stook in Italy for an extra day!

    :D

The "Argies" as you call them, tend to just shoot people rather than fight. I don't think there will be running battles between English and Argentine fans. Most Argentines that can afford the trip won't be the fighting type. That might stop some of the English from having a go, but it will stop most of them. The reason why there won't be vast numbers of Germans for the English to fight is quite obvious: they probably won't get to play each other, and so are not likely to be based in the same city at any stage.
