    Did I miss something?

    USA ranked 13th?

Did I miss like a World Cup that they won or something?

Not as bad as they used to be but they shouldnt even be touching the top 20 imo.

America being no 13 shows how inaccurate the ranking system actually is...They beat lots of easy teams (they do actually think they are gr8 too!) :)

No matter how bad Northern Ireland are...they are easily better than Mali :P

Republic upto 15th place? For Italia 90 were we not ranked no 7?

    I was only 9 ;)

I work with Germans all the time...atm all that matters to me is that we give them a hiding :D:D:D

we used to be higher than 7th!! i think we were bout 3rd or 4th at one stage!!! that must have been fun!!!

I think the ranking system really sucks!! it goes on the games that you have played!!! in other words usa play teams like canada and costa rica and teams like that!! who would be the best that they would play but in europe would be like armenia!!!!

it really needs to be improved!!!!

In fairness, its unlikely that FIFA would do anyting to sto pthe lickarse tactic they have with the US. They are blissfully unaware that if giving the Yanks the World Cup in 1994 was not going to open up the potential market (and thus all the $$$$$$$, all FIFA care about), then nothing would. They are not going to do anythng that would make the US look bad, so its unlikely that th ranking system will be changed anytime soon.

Goto http://www.elerankings.com/ . It has a deceptively simple yet accurate method for ranking international sides. You'll never need the FIFA rankings again after looking at this. BTW it has Ireland at 17th and USA at 24th which anyone would probably consider to be more accurate than the FIFA rankings.

The most obvious fix would be to use a system that refelects the strength and form of the opposition so if the USA beat Bermuda thats worth far less than Ireland beating Holland.

Then the true worth of any result can be assessed.
(except of course the win might have been flucky anyway but thats another story!)

    Mike.

Ireland ranked ahead of Brazil, very nice.
Why are Sweeden and Belgium so high in the rankings?
Also did Colombia win the copa america or something because they are in both top 10's.

To be honest, the list seems broadly very accurate - the US seems to be about the only anomaly. They were beaten by Iran in a fairly equal game in the last world cup so around the 30 mark would probably be right.

Interestingly, Australia win nearly all their games by scores of
32-0 but that hasn't propelled them up beyond 48th. If they didn't have to do that playoff they'd probably be 20 places higher.

Yes, Colombia did win the Copa America, but didn't qualify for the WC. Those rankings are broadly accurate, as has been said. Sweden pissed their group as far as I remember, and Belgium were also quite strong in the qualifers.

Hows the ranking system work? Cuz some of the teams there seem to be very high up in the list and they aren't really that good. Like i saw Honduras and they r in the top 40!

    Rankings are explains clearly on
    http://www.elerankings.com/about%20the%20system1.htm

and don't let Honduras's pedigree fool you. They were very unlucky not to qualify for this years world cup and among other things beat Brazil in the Copa America last year.

    Weaker Same Stronger
    Win +1 +3 +5
    Draw -2 0 +2
    Lose -5 -3 -1

Thats the way the FIFA Rankings should be too, except you should get more points if you beat a team 10 ranks above you than if you beat a team 5 ranks above.

fifa do have some complex maths system which accounts
for the quality of the opposition, and results from the past 6
or 7 years with more weight on recent years.

if u look at the order of the european teams, there'd be few
disagreements but the integration of different continents fuks
    it up a bit

USA have beaten Mexico(7th) 4 times out of 5 in the last 2
    years.
apart from tose 2 teams, the top 20 seems farely accurate
here's a cool page where u can check any teams results over the years.www.fifa.com/alist/index_E.html

as for irelands highest ranking, they were 6th when it was first
introduced around the time of World Cup 94.
after the poor World Cup campaign in 98, they'd fallen to the 50's,
like the Scots now but they look worse than we were then.
another 4 years on and we've clawed our way back up.
a decent campaign and we'll be in the top 10 for sure.
    great to be back

    USA 1 - 5 Jamacia
May have only been a friendly but they have to drop a bit due to that result.
    Can you drop in points?

sorry for the change in topic direction but
usa lost to holland this week 2-0,
beat uruguay 2-1 the week before,
but where did you get that 5-1 result from cause i checked it
with the link above and they haven't lost to jamaica in the last
    8 years.

though they lost away to italy, ireland & germany,
in fairness, their home record this year is 7-1-1 including
wins over fello-finalists mexico, ecuador and uruguay,
    the defeat being against holland.

U.S. Downs Jamaica, 5-0, for Arena's Record 31st Win with National Team

    5/16/02 10:34 PM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Thursday, May 16, 2002) - U.S. forward Josh Wolff recorded two goals and one assist, and Landon Donovan added one goal and one assist to lead the U.S. to a 5-0 pasting of Jamaica tonight at Giants Stadium in the second game of the "Nike Road to Korea."

That's from the official USA team site. Teletext got it wrong because they definatly had it down as an away win, I know that much for sure.
