How does the upload work then?? If satilite is one way?? "Satellite didn't look good because upload would be limited to a 56K modem or ISDN, but I decided to give it a try." Do you stil have to pay your 1p a min?

Is the service available where I live?
The service has 100% coverage of the UK including Ireland.

Is the service available outside the UK?
Due to contractual agreements we can not offer the service outside the UK.

    ehh???

    Nope,

they do the multicast for the 10 a month and have got rid of proxys so no surfing. You can use unicast now with their new service, "Skybooster" but its a rip off. about €30 Euros a month, 20 hours free and 0.039Euros a minute. Now download limit though.

I sent them an e-mail and got a very positive response:

    From: "IPViaSat Support" <support@ipviasat.net>
    Subject: RE: Availability question

    Hello there,

The service is available in Ireland, I will amend the web page.

    Regards

    David Smith

The only thing "wrong" with the service is that you have to get the dish installed yourself.

    TD.

satellite is dire imho. High latency, expensive, not enough competition.

You probably can use if for some games but they would have to support a proxy i would imagine and the ping rate on sat is usually dire.. fast for downloads but ping rate sux as far as i know!

No - it states in the FAQ page that the service would not be suitable for games. High latency I would imagine. Fast for downloading files, not much else.

Still at 30ish Euro, it's not bad. Not as if we are spoiled for choice or anything...

Netsystem Satadsl350 seems fairly good. €30 per month ex vat for 350k, no download limit and available 24hrs. For an extra €7.50 ex vat you can have 1MBit from 2AM - 9AM! :)

its good, but still i would love to see a Sattellite provider that offers upstream as well as downstream at a good price, but guess can't afford them:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

The problem with that is the equipment is expensive.. a normal sat wont do! Also in order to transmit a sat signal (which is what upstream basically means) you need a licence to do so which costs about €50 a year. www.educom.ie do it for a similar price to Eircoms ADSL.

Better off with ADSL in that case as its no good for gaming.
