    umm .... "what" network investment????

Eircom didn't build that network - it was inherited from the state for next to nothing.

But since we have a monopoly making BIGGGGG waves over something the government is planning to do, then that means the government must be diong something right cause said monopoly is getting very worried.

Since when have Eircom given two flups about its customers getting value for money?

"Such intervention may, on the one hand, lead to retrenchment of planned investment by operators in anticipation of open and non-discriminatory access to public infrastructure or, on the other hand, to over supply and therefore inadequate return on network investment in certain areas of the network," the document states.

Well, that'd be all fine and well if there WERE an open, non-discriminatory public infrastructure in place. But there isn't, since Eircom own the infrastructure and have indulged in blocking operators at every turn.

Some state intervention for social or public reasons could be targeted in certain areas such as the access network. But, in principle, the future development of telecoms services should be based on a dynamic, competitive market responding to real market demand, according to Eircom.

Well, this is a bit rich coming from the monopoly that has held telecomms in the dark ages for the past few years, isn't it???

The market isn't competitive since eircom control the network and make it so expensive and difficult for OLO's to access/use.

The proposal to introduce a new State supplier of network infrastructure, facilities and services is unnecessary and would be a disincentive to private sector investment, says the report.

Hmm .. I wonder why Eircom are saying its unnecessary? Possibly because OLO's could by-pass their absurd pricing and restrictions?

According to Eircom, expectations that a rapid deregulation of the telecoms market would lead to the development of low-cost broadband infrastructure had not been met. This was due to the absence of participation by new entrants due to the limited scope of the Irish market, the lack of significant emerging e-commerce demand and the coincidence of a global sectoral downturn, it added.

Well .... possibly one of the major reasons for this is that the government in its "infinite wisdom" GAVE the ENTIRE physical network to Eircom who then promptly locked out everybody else until they ceeded to their [Eircom's] demands.

What a pack of hypocritical, egotistical, avaricious bas**rds. I hope the government invests 900m and puts those pack of greedy fu**ers to rest once and for all.
May 2002 and still no broadband (affordable or otherwise)
