Technically outside the reach of this forum, but if anyone wants to talk...

Five new sound broadcasting contracts awarded today by BCI.

    Independent Regional Radio:
    South East: Beat 101 FM

    Independent Local Radio:
    Dublin: 98FM, FM104
    Louth/Meath: Louth Meath FM
    Wicklow: East Coast Radio.

In additon the following applications recieved for contracts:

Galway Bay FM, Mid West Radio: incumbent + one other
Carlow Kilkenny (New contract): CKR, Radio Kilkenny and one other.
    Kildare: CKR and four others!

Well, since CKR is my local ILR, and I'm not a big fan, I'm glad too see so many people out to get it! However the bet must be for CKR to get County Kildare and Radio Kilkenny to get Carlow Kilkenny.

The WLR, South East Radio, East Coast Radio, Radio Kilkenny, and the lower half of the CKR FM franchises, I believe. WLR are the lead company in the consortium, but have given undertakings to the BCI to keep all broadcasting services seperate. (Let's see how long that one lasts...)

In practice, you may well be able to recieve it beyond that area. (I once, on a very clear and sunny day in the middle of the summer, picked up FM104 in Salthill, Galway!!!).

i should pick it up then :) but it might turn out to be a load of crap :( but another alternative to WLR would be nice

What it means is that WLR hold a shareholding in the contract - there will be certain sales and administrative services which will be held in common between Beat 101 and WLR. But the two stations will be legally seperate entities, in particular, no broadcaster will be allowed work for both. (That's the theory anyway).

Stay tuned for an announcement from ICDG on the future composition of the forums shortly...

Ah I see it does:) -very interesting and hopefully something that will break the monotony of Talk on the airwaves here between nine and noon each day.
South East Radio has a Strong signal covering South Wicklow, from Tinahely right across Aughrim and into Arklow.
This is out of their service area but it has a very large audience there. Heres hoping this new station will send out enough power to do the same.

p.s A radio Board would do well :)

I don't have any great confidence in the whole licencing process. The net effect is that the urban stations will keep producing music for hairdressers and the rural stations for elderly spinsters counting off their neighbours on the death notices.

Hope not for diversity from the system. If you want to run a radio station, it will help greatly if you understand what politicos to buy chicken and chips dinners from.

This new SE regional station sounds like it'll be awful for anyone who does'nt like contempory dance type music, the stations aiming firmly for the under 30 market. I for one proberly wont be listening much, I fear alot of student-radio on a decent budget type output.

On reception, I picked up Galway Bay Radio in Cashel a few weeks back, and WLR can be heard as far west as Macroom if the winds in the right direction!

Indeed and SouthEast Radio at five lately changed their schedule with about ten minutes of news at 5 p.m and then their country and Irish show at 5.10 p.m!
    At drivetime-I haven't listened since-poor advertisers.
No disrespect to that type of music(characterised by songs, whose typical lyrics include..."I really miss my auld Grandmothers rocking chair...down by the lovely lough Ree....Oh lough REE oh Lough Ree...where the three counties....."

    Classic stuff:D
