Lo all,
Here's the deal...
Myself and Ed have got 6 absolutely rubbish old machines from the college to set up a Computer Society LAN. We wanna put LINUX up on them. We have a copy of Red Hat (5.1 I think) but the machines have no CD-ROM drives. That's ok, the readme sez you can take it off an FTP server, so we'll set up a *good* machine as an FTP server and install.
OK, here comes the part where you laugh yer hole off...
HOW DO I DO IT?!?!?!?

Well, I mean, is it really as hard as I'm told?

Dav

PS: Almost forgot...
No 1) Will run Quake to any kind of standard on these 486 66MHz w/ 8MB of RAM???
No 2) They've only got 400MB Hard drives...how big is the final install???

Cheers

the ftp install varies from the different versions, ive never tried it so i cant comment on it,
but to answer your questions, 400MB is loads of space for anything you might want to put on a 486 running linux..
and it will run quake, though it'll be very jerky <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

If you plan on doing *ANYTHING* serious
with these machines 400M will only just get you by if u ask me.
I run linux on my pc I have a 1G partition for it. And i plan on buying another 6/8G disk which i will dedicate to it.
400M will only be a *VERY BARE* install
if i was doing this i would scrap 3 machines and have 3 with 800M drives. Makes a lot more sense.

OK about ftp, Im not sure but as far as i know the ftp install option is no longer in 5.1 for redhat it definately was in 5.0 tho
because i used it.
But you can do a SAMBA install which basically means u could use a windoze box to serve it. Just share the cdrom on the network. I have never done a samba install tho so i cant say anymore on that.

Quake will be jerky tho <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/frown.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":(">

i know nothing about linux dav, but 400mb is really flup all. bloody hell youd be hard pressed to install win95 on that, and that would have nothing in it smile.gif
and then you can forget any apps or games.
even the 800mb wouldbr be much. unless you can get some nice people to donate you some hard drives. i have a 1 gig you can have mate, but youre still looking for 5 more frown.gif
