Would you pick him if you were England Manager?

England will be taking probably 5 strikers to the WC.

Is there 5 better players available?

I rate Fowler and Owen as better than him.
Heskey has more pace, but not as good a finisher.
Sheringham has had a bad run of form, and Vassell has litle experience, and hasnt been picked for every game by Taylor.

Souness reckons he should be in the english squad
(here) , but then i suppose he would say that.

He's got 15 goals this season, and when you consider how much time he spent warming the UTD bench, thats not bad.
His game seems to have improved, he brings other players into play more with his passing and runs etc.

Would you bring andy cole to the World Cup if you were England manager? 3 votes

Yes, he\'s one of the 5 best english strikers

No, I\'ll name the 5 english strikers that are better.

If I was Sven Goran Eriksonn ( and I'm not by the way) I would be driving up to Newcastle, don a black and white scarf and start shouting

who the f*ck cares who is in the english squad?do you think there would be a discussion on weather ireland should bring colin healy or lee carsley to the world cup on an english website

    What if you are English?

Then its relvant, but I don't think many here are. And even of they are, it still might be pointless. And if people are English, they probably know of English boars that they would get a better response on. It makes sense. Englih message boards to discuss the English teams etc etc..;)

So I guess thats all threads about English teams, such as Man U , the Arsenal & Liverpool, out then.

And no talk of Van Nistleroy or any other of those smelly foreigners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

Ideally. But its an unavoidable nuisance. Not the fact that non-Irish football is discussed, but just the level of ignoance of other leagues not as hyped as English.
Inter Milan are going for the Serie A title for the first timoe in 10 years, Valencia for the Primera Liga for the first time in 31, and people are talking about West Brom and playoffs.

so if u tink van nistelrooy is a smelly foreigner i suspose u think keane is also or harte or any irish player playing in england!!!
dont be so racist foreigners make the game better to watch!!!

    "the game"

By that I suppose you mean the English football? Not world football, European football, or God forbid, our own football.
I am all for foreigners in football and like to see Irish players doing well abroad. Similarly, I like to see foreign players doing well over here (and there are many). But having Roy Keane playing for Man Utd ¡s as good a reason as any to follow a team 200 miles away I suppose.

Yes, Keane, Harte, Duff, O' Leary, Moran, Given, all smelly foreigners. They should all be exiled indefinately, never to return to these blessed shores.

Sad. Its not xenephobia to point out how pathetic the Irish obsession with English football, its making the point that there are so many other leagues around Europe and the world that deserve attention. But then the English themselves have a heavy racist element, that is what YOU people are sharing, not me.

    Eh?

Bateman, if you dont have anything to say 'on topic' then f u c k off, and spam your own threads.

Just cause your anglophobic tendancies need airing, doesnt mean that any one wants to read your tripe.

IF I had anglophobic tendencies, I wouldn't need or want to air them here. They wouldn't get a very positive response from the Anglophiles. I think the general response to your poll indicates its relevance. Somebody called irelandforever (very foreigner-friendly name) was the first to question the relevance of the topic. But seeing a how you are aching to get my opinion on this most mundane of topics,

Fowler, Owen, Smith, Heskey (pains me to say it but true), Sutton, Phillips, all ahead. And while we're at it, how do you fancy our chances against the Argies?

    ;)

Lads this is a perfectly valid thread for this board.

The Board is Sport not just Irish Sport and the fact it is also the World Cup board until after the event means that threads like this are extremely welcome here.

If you have a problem with England go elsewhere. I really wonder how much longer can we keep up this "hate the brits" attitude, the only time I am ever against the English team is when Ireland are playing them. My god some of you lot would fit in nicely with the moron anti-Rangers booing brigade that are going to the International matches.

Don't make me start deleting posts please.

Back to topic, no I don't think Cole should go there are plenty of others who are ahead of him. The only Cole on Svens list should be Joe.

    Gandalf.

Seriously i honestly believe for the more consistent and dramatic viewing the premiership is the one to watch.
As for la-liga and serie A, for 80mins its like watching paint dry then somehow it springs to life, besides the local derbies and real/barca games. Players walk around the field with no commitment half the time not denying that some do it in the premier league. I do take interest occasionally in the league tables across the continent but more so for the reason of comtemplating who Arsenal could play next season in europe.
    :)

Well to be honest, there probably would. The English like to regard Ireland as some kind of second team in case the main England team fails (as in world cup 1994), especially as half the Irish team are cockneys or scousers who get to play for the green army just because their granny once drank a pint of Guinness...

What about Ashley? All the left-sided positions are hopelessly undercovered and I'd rather AC than a has-been like Chris Powell or an out of position dunderhead like Phil Neville...

Oops forgot totally about AC ( I hang my head in shame :p)

Fowler, Owen, Sheringham, Phillips and Cole i would bring.

I don't care so much for Heskey, will make England look unskillful and Jack Charltonish. Will probably still be brought however.

    Sutton's in a sub-standard League

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

To the person who said that the English see the irish as a second team because they are all scousers and cockneys who only get tp play because of the granny rule; that was true in the Charlton era, but McAteer will be the only player likely to make the first 11 for the cameroon game that was not born in Ireland, anybody can see that.

And you probably haven't come across many English fans (except on TV of course) if you think they like us that much. They don't.

I wasn't really making the point that this thread should not be on this board, but apart from the moaning I did, there was not much response.
