Can any one recommend how to go about planning a good old-fashioned US road trip? I would love to see as much of the Us as possible and would like to stay for 1 – 1.5 months and want to see things like “world’s biggest ball of yarn” etc. I have found a car rental company that leases cars to people my age, 18, they also take people that are 16 and in some states 15! This includes insurance etc. Hoping to be able to have a great time but I don’t want to stay to ridged to a timetable but will need some aims so we just don’t sit on the beach all day.

    All help would be great.

I can't help you with that at all but have you read Zen and the art of Motorcycle maintenance by Robert Pirsig? He goes from east to west with his son on a bikie, its a great read.

get yourself an american travel guide (the usual lonely planet/aa guides or so).. have a look through it and pick out major attractions you want to see (dont plan every single day it'll ruin the fun), then simply map a route between them to get a rough idea of distance and time.. check out the major towns along the way and consult the guide (they are usually pretty damn comphrensive). hell if your really mad take in a few festivals along the way (burningman!)

stop by darwin, minnesota and see the world's biggest ball of twine rolled by one man! while youre at it, you can swing by austin, minnesota and visit the SPAM headquarters, visit Forest City, Iowa for the largest home shaped like the letter "W" in the world, or Platteville, Wisconsin for the largest letter "M" on the planet.

if you have any questions about the midwest, i'd be happy to help out (native of iowa, and currently of minnesota) - there's tons of pointless, but entertaining stuff do do out here!

My Dad, brother and I are flying to Chicago in less than 2 weeks and, after my Mum flies off to Texas to see friends and onwards to California, we are renting a car and driving the 2000+ miles to Northern California (via I-90 for the most part). Planning to take it fairly handy (8 days, no more than 300 miles a day) and visit as many sights as possible along the way, Black Hills of South Dakota, Mt. Rushmore, Custer's Last Stand, the Great Basin, Reno, Lake Tahoe, etc... Yahoo Maps has helped a lot planning the best routes between towns and cities and googling 'what to visit along I-90' has helped as well. The internet is your friend!
I lived in California for 4 1/2 years and really enjoy driving in the US - 800 miles in one day is very possible to achieve if you have a few drivers and red bull / coffee on hand! But it is much, much more enjoyable if you take it really slow and see everything you need to see - if you miss the worlds biggest ball of twine or the world's biggest truckstop, what are the chances you'll be back that way again in your lifetime?
