Ok-I know there are a lot of threads here but even a cursorary glance at them will anwer your question.
The channels are available at the moment only on Cards registered to a Republic of Ireland address.
It is expected but not guaranteed that they will be available on cards registered to Northern Ireland adresses in time for the world cup, subject to rights issues being sorted out.

NI is the only part of the UK that they will be available in.
There will be no FTV cards as there are BBC Cards.
So the only roundabout way of getting thr RTÉ channels in the UK is to use an Irish address and pretend to be living here.

    Hello All

There was some talk/speculation that RTE might make some sort of service available to G.B. subcribers at some stage.

Does anyone have *any* details of this or any links to substantive reports?

    Regards

    Fred F.

Their only option is a Tara like channel in the UK.
And Tara took off like a lead balloon.

Hello carrols[sic] - number not disclosed.

I have quite a bit of experience in MR, and I doubt that anyone has the slightest idea how popular TARA was overall in the UK. AFAIK no research was carried out.

I can tell you that it was particularly welcome in our household, and I suspect in many others as well.

I did read elsewhere that RTE were planning a simmilar service, but have not been able to find any confirmed reference to this, so if anyone has any facts, rather than 'aeronautic speculation', I would be very interested to hear about them.

    Regards

    Fred F.

    Fred,
    Time for a reality check.
As a commercial interest, Tara was a complete failure.
It failed to make any profit during its presence on Sky Digital.
If RTE decides to put a similar channel on Sky in the UK, you can be sure its new model will be implemented on a profit basis.
This means that it will have to inevitably show non RTE produced programmes. Unfortunately there are rights issues with these programmes, and the hefty fees charged to RTE to show these programmes will impact RTE's cost model when making a decision to air this new channel.
So Fred while you describe my comments as 'aeronautic speculation', can you describe to me a financially viable alternative to Tara.

The only viable alternative to Tara in GB would be a full RTÉ service with partial scrambling.
Those that want to see the scrambled U.S etc programming would pay extra for it.
It is my understanding based on what I've read in the sunday papers here and elsewhere, is that RTÉ are trying to re-negotiate their rights payments so as they would be on a 32 county basis.

The only public statement that I am aware of on the subject was by the D.G of RTÉ who stated that it was their wish to provide a service to GB.
But as you know thats not concrete as it's only words and not plans.

Fred Flange-the only way out for you in the meantime is to arrange a swap deal with a subscriber in ROI whom you can trust and who has the same subscription as yourself.
Once you have their box and card and they have yours , the only risk after that is if the other person should end their sub.
In which case you just tell Sky that your card was lost( say you took it out to stop your kids watching and you didn't know about parental pins etc)-they will cancel your card and send you a new one for pairing to your swapped box ( which you will say you bought privately) and both parties are back to square one again.

    Thanks both for the contributions.

Carrolls- The Aeronautical bit was reffering to your 'Tara took off like a lead balloon.'

As I said, I really don't think anyone knows how well it was received or how many people were actually watching it, but that's history now.

Is there any link to the 'D.G of RTÉ ' quote, i would be interested to read it.

The 'scrambled' option would probably be just what I want, the programmes made outside Ireland would be of little interest to me anyway.

Looks like I shall have take out a fresh subscription from an address in ROI as suggested, but if there was something else in the pipeline, it might make life a bit simpler.

    Regards to all

    Fred F.
