Even though I hate them for getting jammy vs Liverpool... I'd rather see them go through that Man Utd :]

    Should've won aswell.

aye we played crap 2night,they shoulda won... but they didnt!
now all we gotta do is win next week, easier said than done
only good thing from 2nights match is keane's back...

Ugh - horrible game from a Man Utd point of view. Leverkusen definitely deserved to win, and with two away goals it's looking very dodgy for Utd in the return leg.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I thought Bayer were very impressive, they took the game to Utd who as a team were' nt really happening, they looked like the away side. And both the Utd goals were not "proper" ie a deflection and a penalty rather than skill having anything to do with it!

I fancy Leverkusen for the Cup....

    Mike.

United were destroyed tonight. a lucky goal and a penalty was all they could produce. well done to Bayer Leverkusen though. they closed down United players with relative ease.
how many fags does that Leverkusen manager go through every match?

my tip for the cup is Real Madrid

Well it's been shown time and time again this season that Bayer are about a million times better at home than away ... so I fear for Uniteds chances in the second leg! HOORAY!

Brutal performance. Scholes and Butt were excellent but thanks to Veron and Solksjaer in midfield they had too much work to do on their own.

I wouldnt start that £28 million muppet next week. Sure he passed to RVN for the penalty but what else did he do. Someone said last week that he was bought for the big games. Well he was nowhere to be seen last night.

Wow, thats some cristal ball you have there. They are one of only 4 teams left, and are 2-0 up before their home second leg. Brave prediction. They have to be the favourites at this stage though, and rightly so.

United never really got moving last night, I think Bayer will do it at home. I can see United scoring, but can't see them keeping a clean sheet. However, what annoys me most is people calling Leverkusen jammy and boring. They played with 4 at the back, the samed as United, and just because their players aren't all household names, doesn't mean they are boring. Ballack, Neuville, and Ze Roberto are all tremendous players, and although they don't have the flair of Beckham or Giggs, few teams do. They thoroughly deserved to go through at the expense of Liverpool, and will have the CLASS, and probably the luck too, to take United at home. But with keane back you never know. Actually that reminds me, wasn't Keane supposed to be out for 4 weeks? Pah!

I was expecting Keane to play next week but they had to bring him on last night. Scholes and Butt just had too much ground to cover on their own. Next week should see the midfield of Keane, Scholes, Butt and Giigs return with Ole and RVN up front. That and the possible return of Ronnie Jonsen would really strengthen the side. Plus they are capable of scoring two goals again. It will be very tight...tough one to call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

Well I wouldn't start Butt instead of Veron, but maybe Keane and Veron don't play well together, and if Keane gets booked next week, he will get a suspension. United are capable of scoring twice alright, but even with Johnsen, are they capable of keeping a clean sheet? I doubt it.

    Bateman,

I have a feeling you are a big Veron fan.:p

Butt and Scholes were magnificent last Saturday and again last night. Also Uniteds excellent run in December and January just happened to coincide with Butts run in the side alongside Keane.

I bet Mick McCarthy was having kittens for the 12 mins that Keane was on the pitch, whats more if you can belive todays Herald he'll be playing full parts in both Saturdays game and next Tuesday.

    Fingers crossed everyone!

    Mike.

I'm not a Veron fan. But I also think Butt is useless and Scholes os over-rated. And they are both dirty bastards.

Yup, poor performance last night. But it will only Spur us on even more to win over there. I reckon we will win 3-1.

Their goals were two of the worst I've seen in my life.

they are hot favourites now but Leverkusen could give them a little bit of a shock if they get through next Tuesday. anything can happen though. Barcelona still have a small chance

bateman, you're misinformed dude, veron is a flop, scholes = pure class, butt = seems to be maturing into a half-decent player, so what if they're 'dirty bastards'?

So what do you have to say about Keane then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

What do I have to say about Keane? I would say that although he still picks up a lot of bookings this is from determination more than anything else. Contrary to popular belief he has improved as a player in recent years because he has managed to curb his violent streak. You can be competitive without losing your temper. Scholes and Butt are learning, but neither will ever be as good as Keane, in my view, although Scholes is a different type of player anyway.

Man Utd will probably finish this season with no trophies. That will be a disspointment, and people (Utd fans especially) will have to start asking themselves why 28 million was spent on a midfielder, when you've already got the best 4 man line in the league, and a 30 odd year old centre back was brought in for nothing. Now I know they were not planning on selling Stam (they probably knew about the drugs thing), but the 28 million was wasted on Veron; he's not a flop, he was just a needless luxury as far as Uni'eh are concerned. End.

The Arsenal supporters were probably saying the same about Pires last season, last season he was a flop. But look at him now, he's up there with the best players in the premiership.

Now what do you have to say?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,196 ✭✭✭Littletinyman

Utd should have bought Lee Carsley instead of Veron, he's probably one of the best all-round midfielders to grace the game in the last ten years and he's extremely underrated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

What do I have to say now? Well youare comparing Veron's situation with that of Pires, which I don't think is like with like. Veron doesn't need to prove himself, Pires did need to prove himself and did prove himself. Veron has not been a "flop", in that he has not been playing regularly enough, which is understandable given the outstanding middle line Utd have. When he does play, he doesn't even seem to know what position he is playing in. So you are predicting Veron to "do a Pires" next season and prove the doubters wrong? Fair enough, I don't particularly care, not being a Utd supporter, but I feel he will not be given the opportunity to improve on a Pires scale, but if he does, I will not be too surprised.
This is a very bland topic anyway, or at least it was until someone suggested that United should have signed Rivaldo Carsley. A bit of humour never goes amiss, eh Lee?

    What humour?

I'd guess Veron will be back in Italy by mid summer and
they won't get anything like £28million for him. Anyway,
why did Fergie see the need to buy him, as stated above the Man Utd midfield was pretty good already. If you just need extra bodies you don't spend that kind of money, was he expecting to loose someone but did'nt?

    Mike.

Thats also possible actually, maybe he was close to selling Butt/Scholes...but I still maintain that he is/was the wrong typoe of player to compliment Keane.

Of all the highlights of tonights game I think I got the most pleasure from the comment from ferguson in the post match press conference where he said in regard to Leverkusens stunning equaliser.............. I think the ref played more than the two minutes of add on time, or words to that effect.

Yeah I would agree with u there woosaysdan it kind of sux but united played pretty bad. There passing was very sloppy at time and way to casual. All of the players were losing the ball really easily and also not closing down the leverkusen players enough. It was a superb goal by Keano though, sheer class!
