I installed Mandrake 8.2 on one of the cheep-ass underpowered pc's in my school library today. Adn my god is it better then windows. The intenet is about 3 times faster :)

I think i stand a good chance of getting rid of windows if i can iron out this one problem:

The screen flickers when the hd is beening used a lot. I'm guessing it's an irq or other bios setting because the flickering starts the second lilo starts loading the kernel , ie. its not an X issue.

I don't have access the bios yet(gotta find out the password) and I'm hopeing I can fiddle with some settings to get it working when I do.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

You can reset your bios by unplugging the cmos battery i believe. Leave it out for a minute and place it back in, all your bios settings should be reset to default and your password should be blank.

You can disable the bios password by removing a jumper inside
on the m/b , its usually easy to spot eg ,"pass"
if you get stuck post on the security board with your details/spec

    what bios version is it?

award bios's usually have loads of defaults that work.

    e.g. AWARD, AWARD_SW, 589589

there are a few more out there and there are plenty of dodgy sites with this info on them.

    Regards,

    Paul
