There is a way you can start BG2 and totally alter the way you play the game.
There are a hell of a lot of mods out there that I recommend you try.
They all add a couple of extra quests and some add even more.

Note this is assuming you don't have throne of baal, if you do uninstall it.

    First off get
    http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?file=69774

This is a patch to just fix some bugs in the game

Next is the bonus CD's [thanks to celt]

    http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/BG2extras.zip

This is a bonus CD shipped out by bioware which gives extra shops to buy outside game items.

    Then get
    http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?file=80744

This is an absolutly huge modification to the game, hence it being 288 meg. with the following imporvments to the game.

    • 10 New and Returning (from BG1) NPC's
    • 180+ New Items
    • 170+ New Spells
    • 39+ New Creatures
    • 75 New Kits
    • 40+ Minor Quests
    • 5 Major Quests
    • 1 Mega Quest
    • Over 30 hours estimated minimum added game play!

    Then there is the
    http://www.btinternet.com/~deano99/tdd_fr.zip

    Its features include

    • 80-90 New Items spread throughout Baldur's Gate 2 : Shadows of Amn
    • Edits/Replaces creatures throughout the game to hold/carry new weaponry
    • 2 Completely new Stores
    • A totally new game play experience!

If you want to add in more extra features after these there are the following I would recommend.

    http://3ddownloads.com/?file_id=159558

    Info @ http://www.forgottenwars.net/kelsey/

I would very much recommend this addition.

Then there is the tashia mod

    http://www3.sympatico.ca/sentinelsx/tashia204.zip

    Info @ http://www3.sympatico.ca/sentinelsx/faq.html

If you decide to play a thief install this, install it anyway.

    http://www.fortunecity.com/boozers/winelodge/79/GBThfKp23.zip

It expands upon the thief stronghold & stronghold quests quite a bit and, hopefully, makes it a lot more fun and interesting. Read the 'readme' file for more. This version also includes player scripts and the Enhanced Random Encounters component

Then theres some extra stuff that you can do if you want to play Throne of Baal

But you can't use the Darkest Day mod or the Freedoms Reign mod.

There was an un-offical patch by one of the games designed called Ascension.

    http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?file=82102

    Patch : http://www.planetbg.com/bg2/media/files/ascpatchv1.4.zip

This mod involves changes to the battles in the last chapter of Throne of Bhaal that often have many more enemies and spell effects going off on-screen than are found normally in the official release of the expansion. Unlike the other mods that I've worked on for Throne of Bhaal (the "improved" battle series below), the Ascension isn't all about making the combat more challenging. It's about making the ending to Throne of Bhaal longer, more fun and a little more fulfilling. The mod mostly affects the end part of the game, starting at the very end of Chapter 9 when you meet with Balthazar and climaxing at the site of the ascension in the Throne of Bhaal. This mod replaces in full the Improved Balthazar mod. The new Balthazar is probably just as powerful...but a lot smarter and less cheesy...that is, if you fight him.

Then theres also an addition if your going to install ToB.
its called nalias romance which makes the romance a bit more interesting.

Also if you wish to play a totally different game just using the BG2 engine I recommend
    http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?file=86082

Louis "Elhoe" Ho, using TeamBG tools, has made an unofficial expansion for Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. In this partial conversion you will play through a whole adventure without any links to the original game. It includes 60 new areas, 13 new missions, new items, new creatures and a final fight with over 200 creatures.

Hope this helps you get the most out of the game. Maybe if we made it a sticky we could add more stuff to it as soon the darkest day mod will be compatible with ToB. Also there is a Jaheria advanced romance pack out there that I'm trying to find the URL for.
None of these patchs are supported by Interplay, or myself :), install at your own risk.

Im just starting into the game but I've noticed a good few changes.
Once I get a url I'll add the two bonus CD's that means you can buy items from Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale

    Bonus & Collector's Edition CD Merchants 1kb
    Download

The two missing merchants with some extra special items inspired by Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. Once you download the zip, simply unpack both .bcs files to you Override directory and Voila!, the outlets to the extra items are there.

Deidre will sell a variety of powerful equipment near the back of the Adventurer's Mart in Waukeen's Promenade, while Joluv now sells a variety of powerful equipment in the Copper Coronet. (He stands next to the grill in the middle of the room)
