Well it depends, a full install is just uder 2 gigs i think, the partition size will all depend on how much time you plan on using Linux, some people just install it to aquaint themselves with Linux while others install it as a primary o/s.

If your running fat32 formatted partitions for windows then you can add your C: drive to your fstabs file in Linux and access all your files from windows. This way you will have access to both drives.

When partitioning with parition magic, just resize your current drive and then format the free space into 2 segments, one for ext2, that is where your actual o/s will be held and / , then you will have to install swap space, swap space is just virtual memory, it acts like ram.

So i would reckon give Linux about 10 gigs, then you can use it as a primary O/S or just remove windows altogther :)

Anyways as far as a MBR goes, you have the choice to put it either on a floppy or overwrite the current one and install lilo and give yourself a multi boot selection.

Now as far as partition magic 7 goes, i got mine off of kazaa, but watch out for kazaa it has software binded that uses up spare cpu on your system, i'm sure you could go search google for it :)

Good luck with it and happy kernel hacking bud.
    Peace

or you could just use mandrake which can resize fat partitions itself :)

    dont forget to defrag first

    I would reccomend a 3GB / partition , a 200mb swap and a 2GB home.

Yes Mandrake will do all of the Above but there is no need installing other distro of Linux because you want to create and format partitions, you could always opt to use fdisk to partition your drives but it can be time consuming and awkward.

Just download partition magic, resize your current drive, then create your partitions and install to the linux native partition. the swap space size will depend on how much memory you actually have so giving you a size on swap space would be obsolete if we don't have your system specs but 200mb should be find for a standard system with average memory.

You could always opt to install Slackware, but you won't have your nice gui install, but once installed it is a great distro. :)

    Peace and elbow grease
