just wondering if anyone has had first-hand experience of organised treks?

I'm thinking about going to Tibet or Peru but need to find a tour group to go through as I'll be a single traveller and as i've never been outside of Europe, I don't plan to do this alone.

Does anyone know of good operators to go through or would i be better off going through a charity?

    Hi Rachel,

I was trekking in Peru last year and organised a trek when I got to Cusco... there are loads of tour operators and all have to work within the new restrictions and rules enforced by the Peruvian government (payment of porters, max. 500 people on the Inca trail at any one time etc.).

In Lima airport do not under any circumstances use the tour office that is just outside the arrivals area. They are a bunch of <insert expletive> that try to sell you expensive tours. They are aimed at the old Americans....

There are many independant agents that can get you cheap, but very good, tours and treks at a reasonable price. They will collect you from airports, organise cheap accommodation and generally sort out the hassle of sorting these things out. They are locals so you are helping the areas economy (as opposed to a Lima based big agency), speak good English and are very helpful.

Peru (try and get to Ecuador and Bolivia as well if you can) is a fantastic country with so much to see. Main highlights are Cusco (you have to go there) Puno and Lake Titicaca, and the Inca Trail.

If you need any more info on South America just give me a bell! As for Tibet - I'm heading to there and Nepal for a month in October so I'll have more info. in Novemeber!
