Shouldn't the title of this thread be "No RTE press release" ?

    Slightly misleading ....

But to get back to your original point (sorry for straying off the topic) - I'd imagine that they won't do a press release 'til the service is available on the EPG, otherwise they'd probably have hundreds of people ringing to tell them that they can't receive the channels.

So Tuesday morning should see some publicity from all the parties involved. I'd say Sky can't wait to let everyone know.

I saw a sign in the Eircom shop beside the Gaiety Theatre on Friday saying "RTE and TV3 coming to Sky Digital soon".

    Ha ha ha ha!

That's not so bad. It's more than I've seen!!

All I have seen in the last couple of weeks is Chorus mobile offices in the ar*ehole of nowhere!

They actually parked up all day in my village and I saw NOBODY there on 4 different occasions!

    :D

I predict that Tuesday will be an unsettling day for Chorus, NTL and UTV (and Channel 4, if they notice). :p:p:p

Well, the only group that have a lot to gain by having RTE
    on Satellite is BSkyB.
    UTV is the big loser.
More Satellite subscribers in the South means major trouble for UTV. I would like to see their explanation to shareholders as to why UTV is not available to 1.2 Million potential Satellite viewers in the South.
Also I predict that RTE will gain very little in the long run from having a satellite feed. The will be at the mercy of BSkyB.

    I would agree with this.
It may be out of their hands, in that Granada et al are throwing in the spanners, but April 23rd is very bad news for UTV if they don't arrive on Sky ROI soon after.

Would I be right in saying that TV3 is effectively an ITV1 region?

nothing apart from more viewers which is always a good thing. today flicking through the EPG my mother made comments about some programmes and was saying things like "Oh, i'll watch that" and "sounds interesting". she rarely watches RTÉ, only the news and ER. i am sure that this will also happen in more houses around the country with a minidish :)

And as if by magic .......

"Sky satellite customers set for terrestrial service

Irish subscribers to the Sky satellite TV platform will be able to receive terrestrial channels from today, in a move that could enable British broadcaster BSkyB to claim 25 per cent of the TV market here. About 230,000 Irish households, which have signed up to Sky's basic package at €19 per month, may tune into RTÉ, Network 2, TG4 and TV3 in the Republic for the first time using their satellite dish......."

How many times can a thread title be changed ? :p:p:p

Tucked away in the "Arts" section of RTÉ site,

    http://www.rte.ie/arts/2002/0423/rte.html (contents below)

    23/04/2002
    Irish channels join Sky Digital
From noon the four Irish terrestrial channels were made available to Sky Digital customers in the Republic of Ireland.

RTÉ 1, Network 2, TV3 and TG4 are occupying positions 101,102, 103 and 104 respectively on the Irish electronic programming guide (EPG).

Three more radio channels including 2FM will also join RTÉ Radio One on the Sky service.

Bob Collins, RTÉ Director General, said that the priority for RTÉ was to maximise choice for viewers

And finally, the offical, All Singing All Dancing, RTE Press Release...

    http://www.rte.ie/about/organisation/releases/pr_skyplatform.html

IRISH TERRESTRIAL CHANNELS NOW AVAILABLE ON SKY DIGITAL

From 12.00 noon today the four Irish terrestrial channels RTÉ1, Network 2, TV3, and TG4 will be available to all Sky digital customers in the Republic of Ireland.

RTÉ 1, Network 2, TV3 and TG4 will occupy positions 101,102, 103 and 104 respectively on the dedicated Irish electronic programming guide (EPG). On the same day 2FM, Raidio na Gaeltachta and Lyric FM will join RTE Radio 1 on Sky Digital. The stations will be available across the UK & Ireland on EPG positions 892 (RTE Radio 1), 914 (2FM), 915 (Lyric FM) and 916 (Raidio na Gaeltachta).

Welcoming the stations, Mark Deering, Director of Sky Ireland, said "We are delighted to welcome RTÉ1, Network 2, TV3 and TG4 on Sky digital. Having the Irish terrestrial channels at the top positions on the EPG will further strengthen Sky's digital offering in Ireland. Sky now offers the strongest line-up of channels including all the Irish channels and is the best value in multichannel television".

RTÉ's Director-General, Bob Collins, said: "As Ireland's public service broadcaster RTÉ is committed to maximising choice for our viewers and listeners. We put our audience first and by joining the Sky platform we have increased the choice of access to all our channels - RTÉ 1 and Network 2 on television and Radio 1, 2fm, Raidio na Gaeltachta and Lyric fm on radio. Our listeners in Britain, who have for many years been able to access Radio 1, will now also have the opportunity to enjoy our other three radio channels."

MD & CEO of TV3, Rick Hetherington said today; "TV3 is pleased to become part of Sky's basic package of Irish channels offered to Sky digital viewers in Ireland. As Ireland's second most popular channel in the 15-44 year old audience group, we are delighted that Sky's Irish customers will have enhanced access to our service through Sky's electronic programming guide"

TG4 Ceannasaí Pól Ó Gallachóir also welcomes this development. He said "we have always believed that TG4 should be available to as wide an audience as possible on all platforms and today is another step towards achieving that goal"

The success of Sky digital with 220,000 subscribers (up to 31 December 2001) has made Ireland a leader in European digital television with the third highest (approx 20 %) digital penetration rate in Europe. Only the UK and Spain exceed this figure*.

Sky's digital TV offering in Ireland will soon be enhanced by the introduction of interactive services such as email, SMS messaging and other services.

Larry Gogan was the first 2FM DJ 'on air' after the 12pm news. He began his programme : 'I'd particularly like to welcome all our listeners across Europe on Sky Digital'.

DId he? missed that! It's just a pity 2fm is on 2D which is harder to pick up outside UK and Ireland.

Interestingly enough it seems that RTÉ are still using the mono WRN feed on channel 892. If you store 8911 from the transponder frequency, select it, then type in 892 you will notice the difference, even on voices.
