Some terminals are right next to each other but I think 1 and 4 are a free bus journey. It may even take 20 minutes to get there but don't worry. There are loads of signs pointing you where to go you'll be grand. You'll be herded to your flight as if you were a one sheep herd. That's my usual experience of being lost in Heathrow.

    If in doubt - ask.

Terminal 1 to 4 (don't forget terminals 1-2-3 are attached to each other so the first three are essentially one from a walking POV):

    1. Free bus journey
Easy to find in terminal 4, not as easy to find in terminal 1 - most people will go this way (easy to get directions). I'm sure there's a big sign saying "Bus Connection to Terminal 4"

    2. Take the tube (free afaik)
Disadvantage - fine for going from Terminal 4 to 1 (it's the next stop). To go from terminal 1 to 4, you have to travel to Hatton Cross, get off, then take the next tube going to terminal 4. Don't bother. Runs every five minutes peak, every 7 minutes off-peak, takes 5 minutes.

    3. Heathrow Express (free between terminals)
My transfer of choice - nice fast train, clean, mostly empty (nice if you're not in too much of a rush (they're every ten minutes or so) and have a real problem with crowds. Takes 5 minutes.

Usually takes about 60 minutes from when you get off the plane @ terminal 1 from an Irish flight to get to the plane @ terminal 4 (including all the delays). On the way back it'll take longer - 65 to 75 minutes depending. (75 if you're coming back here - the walk to the gate is longer)

That's cutting it a bit fine if you ask me. Is your baggage going to be transferred? If so then you should be OK, as long as they are connecting flights.
