    Has anybody used these?
Do you download them or buy them?
    Are they any good?

Best C64 emulator (no contest) is CCS64.

    http://www.computerbrains.com/ccs64/

    Download the DirectX version.

C64 emulation is pretty much perfect, in my opinion. You don't need a fast PC either (P2-300+).

If you're looking for games, there are lots of links on the above site.

    Hope this helps!

CCS64 doesn't like my machine at home for some reason..
Must be a strage Win2k/graphicvd card combo..

I've tried all of the various resolutions and display settings..

Anyone recommend another C64 emulator with nearly as good results?

    I'm dying to play:
    Paradroid
    Creatures
    Racing Destruction Set
    Laser Squad etc...

i was reading this thread last night and it got me thinking about my days with a C64. off i went to download it and i got some games to play. the games come on no problem but i can't play them using the keyboard. do i need a joystick or can i play around with some settings so i can use the keyboard?
    thanks

is it CCS64 that ur using. if so trying pressing F9 when it loads. Under the options menu, u'll see a submenu called input. her you can setup keys to simulate joystick movments. If ur still having problems let us know

yeah, it's the CCS64. i did what you did and used the cursor keys for up, down, left and right. i tried it out on Pacman and pushing the cursor buttons only bring me back to the start of the game. i'm seriously confused with this thing

So you redefined the keyboard joystick keyset for one of the keysets....but did you go back to the top of the menu and set the control port mode to that key set?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

no i didn't. i'll give it a try later on because i've got to go now. i'll report back tomorrow

    thanksfor your help Keeks

i think i have seriously messed up the whole options part. i hate to ask this but could you please give me step by step instructions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭Keeks

    Press F9
Cursor Down to Options and press RETURN
Curor Down to Input and press Return
Cursor Down to "Define Joystick Keyset"

In this menu you can change the 3 different keysets that are defined to whatever keys up want to use. normally you would only define one set, but u can use 2 if you are playing 2-player gmaes with a friend (if u have any :))

onece u've deifne the keys you want to use to simulate the joystick press return. U will only have to do this once. It will save them for you.

This will bring you back out to the "input" menu
Cursor up to the "control Port 1" option and cylce trough the options (with the left/right arrow keys) untill "joystick" appears
Cursor down to "Mode" and select what user defined keyset u want to use. the correspons to Port 1 off the C64

    Repaet for port two.

What i do is define keyset one, and use it for both ports one and two

    hope that helps

Was using VICE for a while, it seemed like a pretty decent emulator. Got a whole pile of dizzy games, god....... the amount of hours that I spent waiting for dizzy games to load.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭TinCool

The longest load time on any game I had on the C64 was China Miner. This game took 15 minutes to load. You may say, "No Way", but I'd say "damn straight", cos I was that said I timed it. I do remember having Elite on tape and a mate of mine ordered it. However, when it arrived it was on disc (5 1/4). As I owned a 1541 disc drive we swapped. My God, it was great. Elite now took literally seconds to load up. Ah, the memories.

Speeking of load times, one of the best was ghostbusters on tape. It literatley took seconds, but for does few seconds u could play space invaders while it loaded. Brilliant. I used to stop the tape and play invaders, then press play again when i got sick of it and play ghostbusters.

    Christ lads,
I always got load times way longer than that, I used to have ghostbusters on tape too but i think it used to take longer than that, the space invaders wa a good idea though. the longest games to load were the dizzy games and I also had a game called K.R.I.S. that took a ages to load. I reckon I waited a good 30-40 mins for some of those games to load. I used to start them, go have dinner, fight with my brother and then go back an catch the end of the load.
And we didn't mind back then, now you wait 5 or 6 seconds for a ps2 to load and you scream at the tv

Worst load times in my memory were a crap Quicksilva game called Purple Turtles, and a Firebird game called Kokatoni Wilf (sp.?).

Can't remember load times exactly, but they took from 0 to 180 on the C2N counter :-)

did NE one have the simpsons tape, That game took ages to load, and then the second level was absolutely impossible...

Yea the Simpsons was a pretty tough (and crappy game)

Turbo Outrun was one of the first C64 games i ever completed. It took about 10 minutes to load up, then after each level it took another 5 minutes to load each level up. I still finished it though :P I was insane and 7 at the time

Funniest thing I remember about loading games was with Ocean Multiloaders. If you managed to get to level 2 in a game but got killed the prompt would tell you to rewind the tape back to the start so it could reload level 1. However if you just pressed play the stupid thing would go right ahead and load level 3. Ah, moral corruption begins in such subtle ways.

Turbo outrun rocked too! I remember getting it for Xmas and being totally mind****ed because it was the first time I heard 'speech' coming out of a computer. Wow man!

Man I feel old. The first C64 Game to have speech was Tale of the Arabian Nights. The speech itself was unbelivably "computer" sounding and I believe that the speech when the game loaded up went a little like this.

"Tale of the Arabian Nights. Written by Ian Grey. Music arranged by Chris Cox. Copyright, Interceptor Micros, 1984."

Same guy who wrote China Miner, which I thought personally, was a much better game (one was just as hard as the other (impossible more to the point)).

.. I went to the bother of finding the speech on the net and low and behold here it

    is

On the subject of speech and eighties 8bit computers.

What was the first Spectrum game to feature "sampled speech"?

Big prize for anyone who knows(not really though).

Double Dragon maybe, any Midnight Resistance fans here - ahh nostalga when you could buy a decent game for a fiver and get around 20 full free games with c64 mags, ahh when CG+VG was decent with your man Dave Perry was around, then GamesMaster. I love it
