well against USA the conditions werent exactly ideal for the way Duff plays but we know he can do the business up front as we saw against Russia. but id have to agree with you, i would still rather have him on the wing whipping in the crosses for the forwards.

it looks like Mick is leaning towards playing him upfront though

i agree. Hes probably best on the left. I wouldn't mind seeing him play in a free role though, like McManaman did for Real Madrid. He's definately got the knack for going forward.

    He should play....for Liverpool! :D

Did anyone see that story today, Phil Thompson was at the game last night watching Duff. Hmmm

As for the question I'd put him on the wing but with "licence to roam" as and when.

Maybe Thommo was having a look at Reid as well - what a great player, will definetly be a part of the first 16 for the Euro campaign

There are problems with playing him on the wing though. Because he gets forward a lot more than Kilbane (the other option) does, he tends to leave Ian Harte a bit exposed. This is obviously more Harte's problem than Duff's but if Harte is going to play left back (as seems very likely) I'd like to see him have the protection of a more defensive minded left winger.

Having said that, I don't think Duff is best used as a striker. I'd like to see him play in a free role or behind the two strikers as he is at his best when running at defenders rather than holding the ball up.

Out on the left, for me. he just hasn't convinced up front to be there instead of Quinn. Duff also needs to improve his fitness, and also his strength, especially if he is going to be played up front, as it now seems.
Also, Quinn won't last 90 minutes, so it would be an option to have Duff available to move from the wing to a strikers position if Quinn goes off with 30 to go (when we are 3-0 up :) ), and Kilbane could come on, on the left.

i am of the firm believe Duff is best out on the wing. However he does work up front very well as we saw against russia....but still the left for me

I for one think that Duff is the main reason why human cloning should be allowed.

and maybe they could eliminate that 'ugly' gene while they're at it

    Duff for Liverpool? No way!

So he can sit on the bench and earn a hefty pay packet?

Sure at Blackburn he's guarenteed his game, plus they'll be playing in Europe.

No offense to Duff but he's not the finished article, and he shouldnt move anywhere without a contract guarenteeing first team football.

Look at Robbie Keane! Since he left Coventry hes sat out more games than he's played, and Ireland will suffer for it in the world cup!

Nah he'll get his game for Liverpool, seeing as Smicer & Berger are on their way out, being sh*te and all. Then with Overmars on the right... both of them ripping down the wings setting up Owen & Anelka, sorted!

    :p

He should play on the left methinks.

I'm not sure any of us are old enough to remember...I'll look it up.

edit- It could be Ray Kennedy (mid 70s'- early 80s) or Ronnie Whelan (he also played in defence later on) I said none of were old enough.

Duff will DEFINATELY play up front alongside Robbie Keane. McCarthy knows he has to pick the Duffer but can you really see him dropping Kilbane from the left after picking him (AFAIK?) for EVERY qualifier in this tournement.

Plus McCarthy knows Kilbane gives better cover to Harte and as such the Drogheda lad has inadvertandly confirmed Kilbanes place on the side.
