There is two chances of this happening and one of them is Bob Hope, if you get my drift.
Granada are not going to let this happen while they own a 45% stake in TV3. I mean the bizzare situation of Granada/TV3 being in direct competition for advertising with their own programmes on UTV is definitely not going to happen.

they compete on cable and mmds no problem, im sure there are many many more viewers of tv3/utv on the cable systems in all the towns and citys in this country and on mmds in rural areas, and there seems to be no trouble with rights etc

This is a very valid point.
The agreement to have the UK channels on cable in Ireland was drawn up many moons ago now-long before the conflict of interest that is Granada/TV3 could have been thought of/predicted.
If I was in the Granada Boardroom though,I would be looking at the crap state of Cable in Ireland, particularily chorus.
And the lack of funds for investment in NTL.
I would be telling fellow board members to continue the strategy for the Republic of Ireland;ie move more and more of our programmes onto TV3 in Eire and continue to throw spanners in the way of UTV going onto Sky in ROI.
I would be saying that the Sky system is likely to continue to gain subscribers at the current rate at the expense of the Cable companies, now that TV3 is there.
Therefore in a matter of a few years the numbers who benefit from the old agreement that places TV3 and UTV head to head on cable will dwindle.
good job i'm into other things and not the Board of Granada:D

hiya Madman, i personally think that these aggreements over rights are a load of bull, ie: it happened years ago so its ok to let ppl watch on cable/mmds, i have sky digital, if i want to watch utv/ch4 i walk 20 feet to my neighbours to view, where is the logic in that ?, like is another 200,000 viewers really gonna matter ?. im sure there are 200,000 subscribers beind added to cable systems over a year or two. reminds me of the clergy carry on, if it happened years ago tis ok. if itv wanted could they get their channels removed from the cable systems on the same grounds that they state for sky digital

    hi Arkles,
at this stage it has degenerated in to an argument of greed , power, money , advertising income,Rights income etc, etc,
The World is a much greedier place than it was when the original cable agreement was done.
Squeeling slowly back on topic.......RTE are so sensitive to what the "rights" people charge them for this small island, that they have from the start blocked programmes on their tests completely to GB viewers.
This is the fear of having to pay more money to the rights holders.
ITV wern't so afraid as our population would have been such a small addition and anyhow they were just tests.
Thats untill they got hundreds of e-mails from Ireland pointing out the anomoly of ITV being on add channnels and not on the EPG.
That put someone on their high horse in ITV and they pulled the plug as legally thats what they should have done at the start:mad: :(

A more likely scenario would be that CanWest ( Who owns the other 45% of TV3 and a large chunk of UTV) will order an official merging of TV3 with UTV in the Republic, and call it UTVI or something like that.

'Channel 4 Ireland' (Channel 4 UK but with Irish advertisments) is the channel most likely to appear next on the Irish EPG, as it needs the Irish revenue and has no major conflicting interests with RTE apart from US sitcoms.

Of course, it is long term Granada strategy to take over UTV eventually, once ownership regulations are changed (and they have taken over Carlton. According to MediaGuardian, Michael Green and Co have practically given up hope of being in charge of ITV in the future and will quietly retire after a "merger" which will really be a takeover of Carlton. Of course, someone big (the Germans) could throw a spanner in the works of this scinario by bidding for either, probably the weaker Carlton...)

And so I eventually come to my point - Granada have an interest in seeing UTV continue to prosper. Did I mention incidently who has the airtime sales contract for UTV - Granada Enterprises Ltd?

200,000 subs added to cable? Not in Ireland: the number of subs are actually declining for both ntl and Chorus.
