Having recently lost my preinstalled version of MS Office 97 I now need something to manipulate word 97 documents.

Are there any free windows programs that are compatable with
    word 97 ?

    azezil,

I'm using wordpad at the minute but it's not fit to handle tables or graphics etc.

MÓC, FYI, the latest free version of Sun's StarOffice is 5.2, which is kinda out of date, and a wee bit icky on Windows. Sun will be releasing StarOffice 6.0 soon (it's already available to Mandrake subscribers), but it won't be free. However, after trying it, you might well think it's worth the money, and you can do that by getting OpenOffice, which is essentially what StarOffice is built on. All it's short is a few bits and pieces like spellchecking, and even these are available as addons. I had a friend on ADSL download it for me recently, and it's really pretty cool. The only downside is that it doesn't come with a bundled email client of browser.
