when setting up partitions and directories and all that muck, what is the over lap or back up?

it appears to contain the entire disk space.
is some sort of pot you take space from to create your partitions?

    anyway, just curious really

Not quite sure what you mean Eamo. Partitions sometimes overlap which can cause data lass if the filesystems overlap so truncating one is usually best if they do lap.

What partition tool are you using?

Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 root wm 0 - 445 1.00GB (446/0/0) 2101552
    1 swap wu 446 - 891 1.00GB (446/0/0) 2101552
    2 backup wm 0 - 7505 16.86GB (7506/0/0) 35368272
    3 var wm 892 - 1114 513.07MB (223/0/0) 1050776
    4 usr wm 1115 - 3785 6.00GB (2671/0/0) 12585752
    5 unassigned wm 3786 - 7505 8.36GB (3720/0/0) 17528640
    6 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0

slice two in this case is the overlap which spans the entire disk. As and to what it does im not entirely sure, i also know that it is possible to install a solaris system without it, however it is generally recommended to use it.

ill get back to you on this one.
