Anyone ever had any luck getting one to work?

Or found a guide to how to get them to work with linux?

It seems to recognise that its there, but it won't initialise. anyone one know where or what the modem calls are online for a US robotics faxmodem win T1?

    Foobar.

You probably have a Sportster Winmodem 33600/56k.

In which case you should check for the largest chip on the modem ie is it lucent or conexant(rockwell) then I guess try out the pertinant drivers.

I think it will soon be the case that both types of winmodem will be supported with the conexan/rockwell chipset.

If in doubt, post the device string from the windows inf file here so that I can (or) someone else check it against supported chipsets under the current linux drivers.

the device string will look something like this
    DEV_(anumber)_andso-on.

Before you let people tell you, 'you can't get winmodems working' exhaust all options.... most people are just detractors as I have gotten 3 out of 3 winmodems I had working in Linux and my next winmodem challenge is trying to get my Lucent(Mars) chipset winmodem working, but it's on a pcmcia bus.... so that might be interesting.

Its quite unusual, under ME it was recognised as a sportster 33600 whereas under Xp it is recognised as above. with mandrakes ppp utility, it comes up "modem ready" then says "modem failed to respond". would it be that the initilisation and connect calls linux are sending are incorrect?

Ok so it's a sportster winmodem.

    [aside]
You can update the ME drivers to make it 56k I think you will find[/aside]

Ok so all we need is it's chipset..... hold on.......
Hmmm that is an isa modem.... but this
    US Robotics 56K Performance Pro (V.92), Model 0778 (USR325610B), 56K/14.4K d/f modem (PCI\VEN_12B9&DEV_1008&SUBSYS_00D312B9&REV_01)

I supported... Notice the VEN_ and DEV id's here... this is important... in Windows ME under hardware information you should be able to tell your dev_ and ven_ id's properly... but a hack of an inf file with DEV numbers similar to your modem may work../aside

    Anyway...
Check out http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/ti/ti_700.html more than likely the Sportster uses a USR chipset
    Uh oh.... sorry
    * For 3COM/US Robotics Inc. winmodems, drivers were NOT available as of May, 2001.
    From www.linmodems.org
Your best bet is to verify the chipset on the modem itself and you may get lucky and find a supported one.
