Alright, I'm looking to buy a guitar amp for around 400 - 700. It doesn't have to be brand new, I'm just wondering what are peoples recommendations. Everyone is raving about the line6 spider, but after playing it I'm not convinced of its lead sound, perhaps I didn't mess around with the controls enough. I'm leaning towards just finding a 30watt or 50watt real valve amp, like the smallest marshall valvestate, or a laney vc50 or something. It doesn't have to be a loud amp, 30 to 50 watts is enough. Anyone care to give their opinion? Twould be much appreciated.

Gerry try ON-STAGE music on Abbey street(think its middle abbey st-near capel st.)I picked up a Carlsbro 240 watt for €250.They are usually good for used stuff and the likes.

A line 6! They are really handy. If your in a band and you want to record you can just jack the thing into the desk and sound is still hot. The spider (or,indeed, any digital modelling amp) is a fantastic amp. Its more versatile than a valvestate or any of its ilk and will serve you as your tastes and playing change.

Bear with it, a little bit of work and you can get the tone you need. I'd go for one of the higher models if you could afford em though for more versatility.

I got a marshall avp50 for 400 quid in Music Maker.

Your best bet is to go into a few of the music shops with your guitar and try out as many amps in your price range as possible.

i was considering a line 6 but just got too put off. quite simply, it's not valve. and nothing less will do.
in the end i picked up a 2nd hand laney lh50r from musician and i'm bloody delighted with it. it sounds fantastic, is loud and looks the part

vintage valve amps are even better, if at all possible head to beat it music in blackrock, drogheda and you'll find something gorgeous

NONONONONONooooooo! Don't get the AVT range! If you've got 700 go for a JCM or any other genuine Marshall Valve Amp. Not Valvestate.

I bought an old Valve 1979 JMP Marshall head and Cab for 450 and my friend got the more recent AVT50 Head and Cab for 550, and the difference in the valve sound really makes a difference.

Nice one, thanks for the replies. I believe a day of embarassing myself in music shops is in order :) Some Stairway will go down nicely :)

I would have prefered a valve amp but I would have needed about £700 at the time to get anything decent. To be fair to the new valvestate they do sound really close to a valve amp. Obviously a valve amp is better but I wouldn't be so quick to turn my nose up at the new marshall valvestates.

I know what you mean. The new JCM2000 are a bloody rip off, but If you can find some old valve amps you can get some pretty decent prices.

dude, seriously. if your going to drop 400-700 squids on a new amp then dont even think about solid state or modeling crap like spiders, or AVTs. peavey classics (30 watt, all tube, 12' speaker and very good) go for 612 from musicstore.de and from 700 in irish stores, thats the first place you should look. and people should really stop recommending tube marshalls here, if you bought a jcm head you wouldn't be able to afford a cab and if you got a marshall tube combo.....well they suck even more than jcm heads . check out the peavey classics, traynor ycv40s (or whatever they're called!) crate palominos and similiar stuff. or if you want to go the REALLY long way round (same as what im doing) then get an amp from www.ceriatone.com in your price range and buy a low price 1x12/2x12 cab new or second hand off adverts.at least that way you'll have something which sounds professional :D
