Seek the peace within Joe. Even if the government did have the inclination to spend 1.14 billion, they probably couldn't because of EU law.

While not a fan of GAA myself, I respect the huge support it has from the population. I do believe that croker should be opened up. But enough of that cos this is Tech.

Competition is susposed to bring us broadband. Blame Eircom.

Just a little correction in your calculations

    64 million + 50 million = 114 million

    1.14 billion = 1140 million.

    Good point though.

hmm 114 million no 1.4 billion, i should stop reading the sunday world lol.

114 million is still alot, especialy when they offered eircom just 12 million help in setting it up in the country,

and the goverment could make it very profitable for companies like ntl to upgrade, tax cuts and open plaining permission

It just sums up the whole state of affairs in Ireland at the moment. They give 64 million to the GAA who then wont let anyone int othe place when its built!

Lord knows im sure 64 million would make a good upstart in gettin broadband moving in this rock!
And yes if they gave taz cuts and a few other little helping hands along the way maybe this damn thing would get moving a bit faster.

Since we are putting things in perspective, Im pretty sure the small improvement in our lives because of bradband would be outweighted by the massive improvement in the lives of people who dont even have homes if the money went to them.

That said, I WANT MY BROADBAND! smile.gif

The government routinely gives out grants for broadband projects. Most of these are to do with regional backbone schemes such as the ESB network and international connectivity such as Global Crossing.

As to local delivery broadband, Chorus has received money as has (I think) Formus before they went under.

actually it better spen on a broadband network then the home less,
think about it, broadband is about more then mp3s and p0rn, in 2 years time the only companies in ireland will be it the industries will have gone to low skilled low wadge job in the third world, having broadband will insure irelands future, provide job, the more people with job the less on the bread line, the more taxs we get the less each person has o pay in taxs.so by doing this your keeping people in home, because if it in ireland goes to say germany which has 1 million + adsl/cable users then there will be allot more homeless

Skeptic1 we know all that but that is usually backed by 3 time the amounth of eu money, as for the backbone of the regions eircom and esat have pulled out of that leaving only EBS with no plain of action on how they will do it while other havent been able to,

basically this topic is about the fact in 3 weeks the goverment has blown 114million on crap while companies like ntl(my perferred isp to eircom or esat)has to go begging and because of lack of money is no longer upgrading to a two way network.which as far as i can see misses the whole point of it in the first place.

this is just a rant really

As far as I'm concerned, Eircom should do it off their own back, they have been and still are screwing us into the ground. Its about time they reinvested, this way proving that they really want our business. When the local loop is opened up, there will be other moving in to offer the services that Eircom are offering at present, with this compitition we will se some changes, just like BT in the UK.

That all said, Eircom are a shower of ****ers. 8Þ

Maybe they're having too much fun screwing us into the ground to invest. By stalling xDSL and keeping LLU uneconomical, they can continue to sell overpriced and obsolete services. How many people will continue with ISDN when ADSL comes out. ISDN must be a great cash cow for Eircom. Then there's leased lines...

Maybe the GAA will set up broadband and then offer a service to watch the game over the net? smile.gif

this is what really ****es me off about this country, 64 million to the GAA one of the richest organizations in Ireland, they rob the fans blind and pay the players **** all, yet they got this money and refused to even agree to the most basic terms,

SO there's 64 million, now today I find their blowing another 50 million on a ****ing jet with designer lamps 5 star **** pot and king size shag pad.this is aload of crap,

and still no investment in the much need infrastructure of this country,
with 114 million ntl could upgrade allot of dublin city by the end of the year.
