have just bought a new pc

the pc is upstairs, the phone jack is downstairs!!
i need to connect the telephone wire(very very short)next to the wall jack to that modem wire and then put the splitter into te wall jack...
i am an absolute amateur to wires etc and how to connect a modem wire to a telephone wire so any help will be really appreciated...
is it i have to extend the modem wire downstairs from the back of the pc so as to go into wall jack?
    what equipment woul i need???

You could just get a longer cable or an extension lead of some description. Another thing you could do is get another phone point installed. Long modem cables can cause problems, sometimes.
