Kind of dissapointed I have to wait until August only then to realise that I have to wait until November to get the 'Ultimate Super Duper' Version.
New Line Home Entertainment announced Tuesday that The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring will be coming to DVD & VHS August 6th, 2002.

The two-disc DVD set will be available in both wide screen and full screen formats and will include the theatrical version of the film plus exciting bonus material on the second disc. These features include three in-depth programs that reveal the secrets behind the production of this epic adventure and 15 video featurettes. Also included on the bonus disc will be:

One of the greatest sneak previews in movie history, featuring a ten-minute behind the scenes preview of The Two Towers, the second installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy coming to theaters December 2002

The theatrical version of the film (PG-13)

Enya's "May It Be" music video

    Exclusive DVD-ROM online content

A preview of a new Electronic Arts video game

A "Special Extended Edition" of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring will arrive in stores November 12. This extended edition of the film contains more than 30 minutes of never- before-seen footage created for the home video release. This version of the film, available on DVD and VHS, will likely have an R rating. The "Special Extended DVD Edition" will be contained in a four-disc set with two discs containing the film, and two discs with more than six hours of added content, produced specifically for the DVD. These extras will plunge the viewer into the complex landscape of Middle-earth, and reveal how the filmmakers created a painstakingly beautiful, and faithful re-creation of Tolkien's world.

A collector's DVD gift set will also be released on November 12 in time for the holiday season. This gift set will include the "Special Extended Edition" with box art packaging conceived and designed by famed Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee. Included with the DVD are custom bookends designed and sculpted by Sideshow WETA, the artists that crafted the astonishing theatrical visual effects for The Lord of the Rings. The gift set will also include the National Geographic "Beyond the Movie" DVD, containing two previously unreleased featurettes and a photo gallery. These extras are topped off with a set of exclusive, collectible Decipher game cards.

...I think I just soiled myself.

November though? That's a bit of a long wait. I think I'll pick up the not-quite-so-spectacular-but-spectacular-none-the-less edition in the mean time.

Can't wait to see that film again.... and the two towers at Christmas... which reminds me; someone sent this report into Coming Attractions:
"Around a month and a half ago, (I can't remember when exactly) during a New Zealand one-day Cricket Test at Wellington's (Peter Jackson's home city) WestPac Trust Stadium, during half time a man strolled into the middle of the field with a microphone.

"This man was Peter Jackson. He announced to the excited crowd of around 12,000 people, that for his next film, The Two Towers, there is a scene that needs a hell of a lot of noise and has a hell of a lot of orcs and soldiers.

"By now, the crowd had guessed what was going on, and he quickly told them that he needed low whispering noises from them, and his crew would record it for post-production work. The effect of everyone whispering was scarily evil and scary, and blew everyone away.

"He also asked if every single person could get up and stomp their feet in perfect time, whilst slapping their chests to a rhythm. Not only was everyone stomping, but the tight closure of the Stadium walls made the noise echo and effectively double the volume and reverb of the noise. The noise created guarantees that The Two Towers is going to blow The Fellowship of the Ring away."

    ..sounds cool :D

Why can't they just put the whole movie (with extra 30 mins) on one disc? It defeats the whole purpose of escapism if you have to get up halfway through and change disks.

3 and a half hours won't fit on one disc.

And they are waiting until November to release the Special Edition in order to boost anticipation for the Two Towers. It'll be worth the wait anyway.

Isn't there some weird technique where they burn half the movie in one direction and the rest in the other? Why can't they do that?

I was under the impression that it was ~2hours per layer.

Most dvd's being single sided, dual layer disks, this should allow 4 hours. enough for the entire movie with bits to spare.

A dual sided dual layer disk can hold up to 8 hours afaik but most people dont like the dual sided variety.

So they should be able to use 1 dvd for the movie, and pack the rest with tons of extras.
