Can someone explain what these are. I have noticed some films are available as a Criterion Collection as in:

Brazil - which has 3 disc's and Traffic which is a 2 disc set

    Are there any difference's??

Criterion (http://www.criterionco.com) is an American company that licenses 'Important Classic and Contemporary Films' for DVD release.

Their DVD releases are among the best anywhere, but you pay a pretty hefty price for them. Often, the sheer quality of the supplements is worth the price of the disc alone, IMHO.

The Brazil 3 disc boxset is a bit of a benchmark in DVD special editions (http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=51). Its not anamorphic though.

Other Criterions worth considering (depending on your tastes) are: Grand Illusion, The Third Man, Children of Paradise, Nights of Cabiria, Last Temptation of Christ, Andrei Rublev and the 400 Blows (If you can find it), but just about everything they release is pretty special, TBH

Well if anybody is interested Play have the Criterion version of "Traffic" for STG£17.99. Looks like a pricing mistake on there part.

I got the Long Good Friday on dvd from them. Nothing extra on it. Still good though.

very tempted to pick up the r1 criterion edition of life of brian at the mo, as the r2 release (from anchor bay i think) is pathetic to say the least... but then again the pythons might do a holy grail job on it and release a whole new dvd soon :)

i just noticed that the seminal Seven Samurai and Withnail and I both get the criterion treatment as well.. damn my wallets going to be pretty empty.

The current R2 of Withnail and I is rumoured to be a better package than the Criterion version, as it has a commentary that criterion couldnt get (director or RE Grant??).

The criterion release of Life Of Brian is excellant, with some interesting deleted scenes.

Has anyone bought the Criterion release of Traffic?
