    CD-DA Extractor:

    http://www.poikosoft.com/cdda/index.html

I find it's very good, and it gives you full control over the quality. This is a 15 day trial version. I have a, em... 'registered' version.

i tried musicmatch but found it rather akward to use and then when i did it kept giving me little 'dips' in the quality which was really annoying..

Wingogo is very good, along with a vxd file called cdda.vxd.

Basically it allows windows to read the cd tracks as wav files, which wingogo can then convert to mp3.

V handy. only works with win98 though.

Wingogo is GPL'd. mind you i don't know what the state of the cdda.vxd file is. I'd imagine that it's slightly suss.

    Gav

i would recommend musicmatch aswell because u can not only rip mp3s but convert existing mp3s to wav or vice versa.

another good one i use is siren by sonicfoundry. it is pretty good-allows u to choose ur bitrate up to 320kbs (i think) and gets ur cd info from the server so it names the tracks for u. i think, however, that in the evauation version (alas it isnt freeware frown.gif) u are limited to a certain number of mp3 rips but it is well worth the $39.95 if u wish to buy it. check out http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/NewShowProduct.asp?PID=187

dload the free version neway. u never kno. u might like it.

    Audiograbber! http://www.audiograbber.net
    Its the business.
Dont forget to get the proper codec (do a search for l3codecp.exe on http://ftpsearch.lycos.com) works a treat.

    EarJam IMP www.earjam.com
you will have to download it from cnet though. It rips a whole album in around 5 minutes and allows you to pick wahtever quality, and if you want to convert straight to mp3's, it doesnt turn them into .wav's like audiograbber.

Audiograbber now has options to convert direct to MP3 with no intermediary WAV

The best quality:space ratio you'll get is from using the LameENC encoder at VBR levels 3 to 5.

(VBR is Variable Bit Rate, which changes the bitrate of the track depending on how much is happening in the audio at that stage - it used to be a little dodgy but the latest VBR encoders, especially Lame, produce perfect quality tracks.)

Use Audiograbber and drop a recent beta of lameenc.dll into the program directory, Lame will then appear as an option in the encoders section.

Avoid anything that uses the Xing encoder like the plague, it's rubbish - very fast but horrifically bad quality.
