Best Wireless Cards (PCI/USB/PCMCIA)

    Hi all,

Due to purchase/test a wireless setup between 2 houses of which the distance between them is 160 metres apart....

I would like to know in people's knowledge/experience what the best 802.11b cards are out there(not seriously worrying about security just range)... I see Cisco Aironet 340-series cards get coming up trumps in reviews and the integrated antenna has a high sensitivity level with good output power....but they seem to be expensive....

I also wonder if a USB wireless device has better range then a PCMCIA device because it is extenal to system (less interference) and has more physical room for a larger integrated antenna...

    TIA,
    J.

Lucents gear seems to be very very popular, they're cheaper than Ciscos stuff too. If I had the choice I'd use Lucent the whoel way.

In my old job they used lucent gear the whole time. There were about 14 wireless lans at work. Very reliable.

Hmm, I don't know about USB cards though. Its a good question.

    Yellum,

If you are at the wireless meeting tonight...I'll talk to ya there about it...

I'd be the wierd new-looking guy sitting in the corner with the 30-ft Antenna under his arm...

    James.

we're using lucent Orinoco silver $80-125 on a club system (ntl connection) with helical antennas (home made). Good distances can be achieved line of site up to 500m and more. Amps get you a lot further:).

    Daithi,

I would be interested in finding out more about this, esp. your home made antennae. Do you have pure LOS when you quote these 500M distances?

I am trying to connect 2 houses about 170 metres apart with very close LOS (minus some trees and about 5 foot of a gabel end of a neighbours house.

    TIA,
    J.
